Really interesting take on the current status of games and gaming in general.
I personally never buy games priced above 50$ CAD until they are deep discounted. I just bought Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth for 25$ CAD on Steam which was originally sold at 95$ CAD. It’s not because I don’t have the means on the contrary. I just find that anything above that price is just not worth it. There are indie titles worth more in value than AAA title. I never buy premium, deluxe or upgraded game packages because I don’t care about maps, booklets, skins or soundtracks. I don’t mind waiting 1 year or 2 before playing the game. Wait till steam has a sale and the game is 75% or more off. That means for me that I can buy more games with the same amount of money.
I hear ya. I got Cyperpunk and Red Dead II well over a year after their release, for less than $40 (US) via Steam sales. This trend at $50 to $80 is ridiculous.
I saw an article saying Fable (now delayed again to 2027) was gonna sell for $94 (but maybe that was the deluxe/early release (3 days?)), but anyway, I was thinking, no way, can’t be worth that.
My purchase at full price is very unlikely, even at $60, unless ratings are sky high.
I have purchased Baldur’s Gate 3 and Solasta 2 (currently in EA) at full price and that’s the only games in the 202x decade to have been purchased at full price. I’m still playing BG3 with new mods..it was worth it ![]()
For me, this goes for ANY game. I’m at a $50 limit. And even at 50, it must be remarkable. The sweet spot is between $30 and $40 (unless a super Steam sale happens).
Just wait for GTA VI. I’m pretty sure it’ll go for over a 100$. Last game I bought full price was Subnautica 2 in EA a couple of months ago at something like 45$ which I find reasonable and well priced for that game. All Final Fantasy 7 Remake were borderline a 100$ here. 95 ish. That’s for a remake of a game AND A THIRD OF A FREAKING GAME !!! not a brand new title. The game market needs a serious correction at this point.
The worst of them all is Nintendo. Wait for a sale ? You’ll wait a while. Most game never go on sale and when they do it’s a 15-25% drop never more. Most game are price 79 or 89. They know people and parents will drop the cash because Nintendo…
The game of ‘Life’ is the only real game in town. . . if you’re successful to compete to the very end, you’ve payed more than enough.

The most modern AAA game I’ve played is GTA V. I have no wish or desire to play modern AAA titles, frankly. The only modern game that looks interesting to me is Pragmata and that seems to be more of a AA title, made on a smaller budget and with a much clearer scope.
Not sure why, but I just don’t find modern games super interesting, especially mega series like CoD or Forza or whatever. There are so many old games that I can play and that peaked my interest for a longer period than whatever BS EA or Ubisoft has.
At least Nintendo, even when the game they make flops, is still pretty good. But yeah, Nintendo is frankly annoying. I dislike them quite a lot, but oh well.
I bought a whole stack of games for Steam through HumbleBundle a number of years ago which I still haven’t played. On the rare occasion I do have time to play, I usually fire up Portal2, HL2, or Halo-CE. I’ll probably buy the new Halo campaign when it’s (re)released next month if it’s available on Steam for linux.
I also NEVER buy any game that requires an online connection to play in ‘single-player’ mode.
I rarely buy games at full price and almost never purchase them pre-sale; Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl double pack has been only one I purchased before it’s release thus far.
Exception to full price ones are Switch games by Nintendo which are rarely on sale.
My best sale find on Steam has been thus far RDR 2 Ultimate Edition that was on sale for -90% some time ago.
Since how the European Commission got lobbied by game company CEO’s with how the Stop Killing Games citizens initiative ended up with them deciding not to do anything. I’ve decided I will only buy games from GOG and if there’s an AAA game that I want to play, I’ll just not buy them from Steam anymore but just grab them for a free source, maybe with an exception but only then when on sale. Since I’ve had my Steam account I haven’t grabbed any games from other source, but I’m Voting with my wallet now!
I know they are continuing and have more fronts to keep going at it. I’m just tired of the AAA Game industry handles things and how they twists things in their favor with the lobbying. So if they do have such a shit attitude towards their client base then might has well return the favor by not buying their games anymore.
That’s very fair. There are so many old games that are good, maybe even brilliant, that not too many people talk about.
I built up a collection on GOG as well in the past year and I found out there’s also still quite a few good Indy games. If there’s an AAA game that I do want to play, I’ll just download it for free so my money doesn’t go to the AAA industry either way, the only exception I’m probably going to make is for Capcom.
With all respect to those buying game there will always be people (Id10t) buying game at full price not being able to wait for a sale. It’s because of those people that they keep rising the price of games. If a large majority of people would stop buying 89$ games tomorrow they would have to lower the price because in the end we are the power here. We buy their products. They cannot force us. That’s why the majority of my games are now indie titles. Every now and then I get a AAA at deep discount.
[offtopic a little here]
The same goes for scalping. The fact that it works is that there are people willing to pay for their product multiple time the price of the product to get it and not wait.
Again no offense to anybody but for god sake wait for a sale to discourage this behavior.
So be it. I hate the current Internet, where you can get banned or worse (UK, ahem, ahem) just for wrong-think (even if it’s the truth).
