This is not surprising. Quite a few open source developers already work at Microsoft, given that Microsoft has also become open to Linux.
A linux expert might be able to do it but keeping such a system up to date would be difficult.
There are probably online articles that detail the steps and risks. It’s easier to just go with a different distro, as every service available from the Arch/AUR repos that you currently know and use that integrates with systemd needs changes to work with whatever init system your other distro is using.
Yes, there are different degrees to take “non-systemd” and how far the distro really goes.
I do have another distro with runit that I’m exploring, and I find it very easy and lightweight as an init. And using cron for daily/weekly stuff that previously would be systemd Timers.
If I am not mistaken, MX Linux has an implementation of both SysVinit (?) and systemd that a user can choose at the Grub boot menu. So it should be possible though perhaps not trivial to implement for a layman like myself.
Yes, it may be possible that EndeavourOS team may allow the user to choose their init system of respective choice. But as @andrewb told, it can be difficult to maintain different-different init options.
So, what is the viewpoint of @joekamprad over this ?
My guess is that it’s not going to happen. Maintaining it would be a pain.
It’s much easier to install Artix. That’s Arch without M$-Soystemd.
If Arch decides to switch the init system, or offer soystemd alternative packages, it will be easy to use them on EndeavourOS. But in the meantime, either keep your current setup, or install Artix.
As of now, I am happy with EndeavourOS so far.
And switch the OS will be pain for me as I need to create new usb tool for it. When I downloaded EndeavourOS iso, it took around 3-4 hours to download. Meanwhile I did my other things.
Also, as EndeavourOS is the first distribution which offered me Linux experience in my life, hence it will be tough for me to remove this from my system…
Or Gentoo, or Void, or Debuan(sp?), etc.
According to your logic Linux in general should be called M$-Linux, Archlinux M$-Archlinux, EndeavourOS M$-EndeavourOS etc
Microsoft is until today, still one of the top 10 contribrutors to Linux.
By using “Linux products”, even you support this
