System occasionally hangs and freezes on KDE

Noticed fairly recently (well, within the past month) that KDE has occasionally completely frozen (ive had to hold the power button to turn it off on occasion, and sometimes it has crashed until it went to sleep due to inactivity, and then recovered itself after logging back in)

More recently i noticed L4D2 stopped working and i noticed applications seemed to be missing their toolbars (here)

Any ideas why?

are the system logs, including dmesg.

Probably related to flatpaks. Why are you running in Dos mode? Looks like Windows is installed with GPT. Isn’t your system UEFI?

which part is related to flatpaks? the l4d2/no toolbar stuff or the crashes?

Didn’t realise i was running in dos mode, is this a bios setting globally or drive specific?
checked boot options on boot today, most drives have a UEFI option but the one my root partition is one doesn’t have a UEFI option.

NAME TYPE SIZE PTTYPE FSTYPE
sda disk 238.5G dos
├─sda1 part 82.5G dos ext4
└─sda2 part 155.5G dos ext4

The partition table (PTTYPE)…

well i’m blind. Should i change it to UEFI? if so how?

The type of partition table is set before formatting a drive and /or it’s partition(s). Get the picture (i.e. complete re-install from scratch…)?

In dmesg i see a lot of errors related to cd/dvd drive. Not sure what this is about.

Have you tried running on the r8169 kernel module for your ethernet? In order to do that you would need to uninstall the r8168 package and reboot. Then check if ethernet is working

inxi -Na

Also notice you are using lightdm on Kde. Just wondering why?

No idea what sr0 is myself, which is rt of my confusion.

Swapped the Ethernet module, web files seem to load a tiny bit quicker.

According to the EOS welcome page, my display manager is sddm, not lightdm. I did fiddle with them a while back but i noticed some seemed to break the login page a bit (mostly graphically although one wouldnt let me log in), so i returned to sddm

Noted with the partition table / re-install from scratch, i may try it at some point.

sr0 are assigned by the kernel, to devices that are recognized as CD/DVD drive. Do you have that hardware?

What does inxi -Na show now? It should show the r8169 kernel module.

Are you using SDDM?

systemctl status sddm

I have one cd/dvd drive on this pc.
Here are the results of those two commands:

Looks okay. The only other issue i see is that you are using an older Radeon HD card.

Edit:

Graphics:
Device-1: AMD Barts PRO [Radeon HD 6850] vendor: Micro-Star MSI

    chip-ID: 1002:6739 temp: 62.0 C

Do you have the xf86-video-ati driver installed?

Not sure. Plunged into a re-install on a UEFI partition table (GPT) earlier on today to remove that aspect as a possible cause. Now when i try and boot the drive it thinks it is booting windows.(without using windows boot manager itself and therefore crashing). Doesn’t seem to go to the grub / systemmd-boot (which i used for this install to try it out), menu at all, so i can’t access KDE Plasma currently.

From a Live-Iso, please boot and arch-chroot into the installed EnOS. - Then, post your lsblk -f so we can see, what is mounted and what isn’t.

used arch-chroot:

Sorry for the bump, i fixed the boot issues fine, but i still get an error which is pretty much the same as the error i posted above. L4D2 used to work but then randomly stopped around a months ago.

Crashes tend to happen when i am playing games (Stuff on wine, CSGO), which is fairly frustrating when i am 90% through an online game and the PC crashes. Any further ideas?

I’m also using no flatpaks.

Sounds like game platform issues.

Maybe, but these are completely different games/utilities, had a few crashes using Vivaldi a while back, as well as crashes while using wine on editors and non-game applications. It tends to be as a result of an interaction though, pressing the left arrow, clicking on a YouTube video to pause it.

I’m not a gamer but if i was i would be using steam and proton and or lutris.
