System frozen during update and failed to boot. KDE Plasma 6 SDDM

inxi -Faz

soon, some oops happened

I tried to install last update. Last successful update was about three days ago.

Current update was stucked after all packages was downloaded and system started to run post installation hooks.

When third hook was running (update devices configuration) system got freeze. Maybe dm, mabe something else. I waited almost two hours, but unsuccessful. I have had to hard reboot my laptop.

After boot i saw many errors and system didn’t start.

I tried to finish update from livecd and chroot

I am successfully enter into chroot, ran pacman -Syyuu, but only few package was available to update. They updated successfully and for another runs pacman says that there nothing to do.

Actually i got few problems during update from chroot, but solved them on the fly

  1. db.lck was breaking update process. I renamed it, then update started
  2. Like I said only few, 2 or 3 packages, was offered by pacman to update, but many errors about that some entry exists appeared on the screen. I solved it with --overwrite option

Then update was successfully finished

But after reboot back into system errors left same and system left broken.

I assume that i have downloaded packages somewhere in cache, but post-download hooks should be completed successfully.

Is there a way to run hooks or run complete installation process?

Which logs i found

Are you using grub or systemd-boot?

grub

Use arch-chroot to re-enter the chroot and then reinstall your kernel package. For example, if you are using the normal kernel, use pacman -S linux

Done, but i got some errors during update

Output

[liveuser@eos-2024.04.20 ~]$ sudo arch-chroot /mnt

Also I forgot to say. My system drive is crypted by luks. I assume that is not so important, but who knows

maybe i should mount /etc. One moment

Those errors can be ignored.

They are because you are in a chroot. They are just notifications failing.

Oops, I missed that one. Yeah, you should mount /etc. More realistically, you shouldn’t have /etc separate from / in most cases.

Yes, for now it is done. But last line make me confused. I’ll try to boot system for now

fatal library error, lookup self

Unfortunately it didn’t helped

I understood why /etc mounting was needed. Just beacuse i mounted some extra directories over proc, sys and dev.

When i mounted /etc i broke boot because it was livecd /etc

I retried whole process with only needed directories mounted and reconfigure grub and boot was restored. But system still broken. I am getting multiple errors on startup. And last ones about that the login manager can not start.

I presume that reason is broken nvidia drivers, beacuse screen glitches on startup. I am seeing the same if i boot in livecd without drivers. And also nvidia drivers was in first update package, that broke system.

How can i reinstall nvidia drivers? Is it enough to run

pacman -S nvidia-lts

or needed something else?

in pacman -Ss nvidia i get next output

output
extra/nvidia 550.76-1 [installed]
    NVIDIA drivers for linux
extra/nvidia-cg-toolkit 3.1-6
    NVIDIA Cg libraries
extra/nvidia-container-toolkit 1.15.0-1
    NVIDIA container runtime toolkit
extra/nvidia-dkms 550.76-1
    NVIDIA drivers - module sources
extra/nvidia-lts 1:550.76-1
    NVIDIA drivers for linux-lts
extra/nvidia-open 550.76-1
    NVIDIA open kernel modules
extra/nvidia-open-dkms 550.76-1
    NVIDIA open kernel modules
extra/nvidia-prime 1.0-4
NVIDIA Prime Render Offload configuration and utilities
extra/nvidia-settings 550.67-1
Tool for configuring the NVIDIA graphics driver
extra/nvidia-utils 550.76-1 [installed]
    NVIDIA drivers utilities

PS Looked at the output and found out that the nvidia and nvidia-utils are marked as installed. I’ll try to reinstall them

And reinstalling nvidia drivers also didn’t helps :frowning: But at least screen glitches gone.

Looks like I have to reinstall every package from last update. But I have no idea how to do it, because

pacman -Syyuu

doesn’t offer any for me and says that the system up to date

What is the current issue you are having?

Something that looks like that

What process are you using to chroot?

sudo cryptsetup luksOpen {volume} {label}
sudo mount /dev/maper/{label} /mnt
sudo mount -o bind /sys /mnt/sys
sudo mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev
sudo mount -o bind /proc /mnt/proc
sudo mount -o bind /usr/lib /mnt/usr/lib
sudo arch-chroot /mnt

You shouldn’t be doing any of this when you use arch-chroot. Just mount what you need to mount for the system and then use arch-chroot.

Also, this:

Will break things pretty substantially.

Go into the arch-chroot properly without doing any of that extra stuff and then run:

paccheck --list-broken --md5sum

Then reinstall any packages that are listed there.

After that, reinstall you kernel package.

without line

sudo mount -o bind /usr/lib /mnt/usr/lib

I get error

/bin/bash: error while loading shared libraries /usr/lib/libncursesw.so.6: file too short

When do you get that error?

When try to sudo arch-chroot /mnt

Full process for now is

sudo cryptsetup luksOpen {volume} {label}
sudo mount /dev/maper/{label} /mnt
sudo arch-chroot /mnt
