Struggling to install nvidia and optimus

Hello, I’m a new french user.
I try to migrate 3 computer on Endeavour OS. Using Xfce.
I have some difficulties with installation of nvidia on my laptop with 2 GPU whereas my 2 others monoGPU nvidia computer running without problem.

  • Without optimus :
    – black screen on nvidia-installer-dkms : have to login in tty then using nvidia-installer-dkms -b to reboot on lightdm.
  • for a working xfce I do invidia-installer-dkms -b ;
  • for installing optimus :
    I do : systemctl disable bumblebeed.service then install optimus-manager and optimus-manager-qt (I’ve try with the git versions too)
    Result : black screen : I do log in another tty for testing or back to previous conf.

My goal is to enable optimus and kms.

I’ve use this tuto :
https://discovery.endeavouros.com/nvidia/optimus-manager-for-nvidia/2021/03/
https://discovery.endeavouros.com/nvidia/nvidia-optional-enhancements-and-troubleshooting/2021/03/
And many tuto for arch.

here som log :

Greetings and welcome to the forums,

Nvidia and optimus can always be a hit or miss. I see your BIOS is up to date, so luckily we won’t worry about that ( Nvidia doesn’t like out of date BIOS! ). Without knowing exactly how you installed everything, there are generally 3 EndeavourOS wiki tutorials you want to use to get Nvidia/Optimus up and working. You’ve mentioned two of them already, but for future context I’ll briefly link all 3 since I know there’s like a dozen different Nvidia/Optimus/etc wikis to look through so it can get a little confusing at first to know which to use.

  1. https://discovery.endeavouros.com/nvidia/nvidia-installer/2021/03/
  2. https://discovery.endeavouros.com/nvidia/nvidia-optional-enhancements-and-troubleshooting/2021/03/
  3. https://discovery.endeavouros.com/nvidia/optimus-manager-for-nvidia/2021/03/

Now I assume you’ve tried those three and still were unsuccessful?

There is one other post here that is a guide to install Nvidia hybrid graphics that you could try as well:

Thank for your answer,
I’ve tried the last tuto (Nvidia hybrid).
The xorg give an error :
(EE) cannot run in framebuffer mode. Please specify busIDs for all framebuffer device.

optimus-manager is load and work when I do prime-offload before, but startx fail with the framebuffer error.

I dunno if @ricklinux is all tapped out from yesterday’s thread, but the more you help out others, the more I learn too from you as well :wink:

@whelagen I’m not an expert, but I do have nvidia hybrid hardware as well, so hopefully others can chime in to other some advice. I’m sure some other users might need some of your boot logs, but for now I just want to double check your nvidia install process.

Note, you don’t have to do all these steps IF you’ve already done them, but if you missed or skipped any of these steps before, then you may need to do the whole process over. Just let me know if you have or have not done all the steps below that I’m about to list out:

When I run sudo nano /etc/default/grub, mine shows the following,

  GNU nano 5.9                                                                           /etc/default/grub
# GRUB boot loader configuration

GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
GRUB_TIMEOUT=5
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="EndeavourOS"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nvidia-drm.modeset=1 quiet loglevel=3 nowatchdog"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

You want to put nvidia-drm.modeset=1 first before the rest, this allows to force your system to boot the nvidia modules essentially.

So the line should read like this:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nvidia-drm.modeset=1 quiet loglevel=3 nowatchdog"

Save the file, ctrl+x, hit Y to save and rebuild the grub.cfg by running:

sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Don’t reboot yet, there’s another step after this so hold tight!

Ok now we’re going to tell your system to force nvidia drivers to load on early boot (this helps to prevent black screens before login screen):

sudo nano /etc/mkinitcpio.conf

# vim:set ft=sh

# MODULES

# The following modules are loaded before any boot hooks are

# run. Advanced users may wish to specify all system modules

# in this array. For instance:

# MODULES=(piix ide_disk reiserfs)

MODULES="nvidia nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm"

You’re only editing that very last line, you want it to look exactly like mine, same as above:

MODULES="nvidia nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm"

Once you’ve done that…Save the file, ctrl+x, hit Y to save and rebuild the mkinitcpio.conf by running:

sudo mkinitcpio -P

Reboot and (fingers crossed) should be good to go! There may be some additional steps i.e. if you have any screen tearing, but if you don’t notice any issues then you should be good to go for the most part, hopefully!

Let me know if these are the steps you have done or not, and we’ll try our best to go from there.

Hybrid graphics can be challenging. Just F.Y.I. as far as the tutorial goes.

Important notes :

Bumblebee : optimus-manager is incompatible with Bumblebee since both tools would be trying to control GPU power switching at the same time. If Bumblebee is installed, you must disable its daemon (sudo systemctl disable bumblebeed.service, then reboot). This is particularly important for Manjaro users since Bumblebee is installed by default.

So i don’t know why one would install it?

I suggest reading the installation instructions for optimus-manger so you understand how it works.

I am no expert on this but i have helped install it a number of times. Sometimes it just works. Other times it can be trouble. Depends on the Hybrid hardware. Usually it’s just a matter of installing the nvidia drivers and then install optimus-manager. But sometimes things don’t work for whatever reason. Now with the newer Nvidia drivers it’s hard to say. The additional enhancements may play a part.

Thanks @Scotty_Trees for your answer,
I have already do this, and my screen is still black …
So I’ve check your two step and do the two command with no luck.

Thanks @ricklinux bumblebeed is disable. I’m going to read you’re doc.

I’m going to save the boot log, then reinstall dkms with the -b option for sharing my boot logs.
best regards

off topic, gotta walk my lil chihuahua, so be back in an hour! hang tight and good luck!

@whelagen
Does your laptop have “Optimus” or "switchable"in the Bios?

Welcome to the forum @whelagen :partying_face: :balloon: :tada: :enos_flag: :enos:

On my Windows installé, when I install nvidia drivers, via nvcleanstall, it install optimus.
On my laptop uefi, there are not a lot options. I’m going to check your idea.
Thank for your attention.
In Uefi, there is only on option for graphics : DVMT Pre-Allocated wich is configured at 64 M

What happens in Windows stays in Windows. :laughing: So Your Bios setting you refer to is just setting the allocated memory. There must also be some other settings for graphics such as integrated? Does it not have an integrated or dedicated graphics setting?

No, there are no other section in my UEFI.
I was very surprise that kind of UEFI compared than my others laptop.

What happens in Windows stays in Windows.

I’m not a fan of micro$oft. That why I prefer to use linux since 15 year. But with that nvidia problem, I feel like a novice, and now, I want to understand.
best regards

Do you have multiple screens? I wonder if you should have “intel nvidia” in the modules section of mkinitcpio.

Hello Rick,
No : this is my laptop : one screen and two GPU.

I’ve read that we don’t have to configure nvidia in X11 when optimus is working.
But if I don’t tell X11 the BusID, X11 say a frame buffer error.
With nvidia or nvidia drm, there is the same error in X11 as above.

Installed package : pacman -Qss nvidia

You have a newer Nvidia card. There have been some reports of frambuffer error on some older cards and not necessarily hybrid setup. What is the actual issue when it boots is black screen? You could try removing xf86-video-fbdev.

Did you try installing nvidia without bumblebee and then just installing optimus-manager after.

Have tried what you suggest to me :
Remove xf86-video-fbdev and then install nvidia via sudo nvidia-installer-dkms
Have a message that say my Light display manager failed and this xorg log :
