Starting of chrome based browsers needs very long

Hello

I switched to EndeavourOS with my new notebook. So far I am very happy with it.
But I detected a problem where I need your help.

When I start chrome based browsers (chromium, google-chrome, vivaldi) the starting takes quite a long time. Almost 10s for example for chromium. A black window appears directly but the real GUI after the 10s. At vivaldi the black window does not appear, but also takes long to load. Firefox instead starts fast.

When I start the browsers it looks like that:

[3745:3762:0104/113643.305420:ERROR:object_proxy.cc(577)] Failed to call method: org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties.Get: object_path= /org/freedesktop/portal/desktop: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.InvalidArgs: No such interface “org.freedesktop.portal.FileChooser”

[3745:3745:0104/113643.325987:ERROR:policy_logger.cc(156)] :components/enterprise/browser/controller/chrome_browser_cloud_management_controller.cc(161) Cloud management controller initialization aborted as CBCM is not enabled. Please use the `--enable-chrome-browser-cloud-management` command line flag to enable it if you are not using the official Google Chrome build.

It looks like it is a problem with the hardware acceleration / the graphic card to me.

I added a file with my hardware information and also the gpu-info (chrome://flags) of the browsers.
I am using i3 as window-manager.
If there is something I should also add, please let me know how to collect the data.

Thanks!

vivaldi_gpu.pdf (490.3 KB)

if you could please post the output the same way as the first Error output screen you give instead of PDF files which most will refuse to open since they dont know who you are and what your willing to do.

Sure, I can add it. They are not to less lines. I hope it works.

lazy_clear_resource_on_first_use: https://crbug.com/dawn/145: Clears resource to zero on first usage. This initializes the resource so that no dirty bits from recycled memory is present in the new resource.
use_temporary_buffer_in_texture_to_texture_copy: https://crbug.com/dawn/42: Split texture-to-texture copy into two copies: copy from source texture into a temporary buffer, and copy from the temporary buffer into the destination texture when copying between compressed textures that don't have block-aligned sizes. This workaround is enabled by default on all Vulkan drivers to solve an issue in the Vulkan SPEC about the texture-to-texture copies with compressed formats. See #1005 (https://github.com/KhronosGroup/Vulkan-Docs/issues/1005) for more details.
vulkan_use_d32s8: https://crbug.com/dawn/286: Vulkan mandates support of either D32_FLOAT_S8 or D24_UNORM_S8. When available the backend will use D32S8 (toggle to on) but setting the toggle to off will make it use the D24S8 format when possible.
vulkan_use_s8: https://crbug.com/dawn/666: Vulkan has a pure stencil8 format but it is not universally available. When this toggle is on, the backend will use S8 for the stencil8 format, otherwise it will fallback to D32S8 or D24S8.
disallow_spirv: https://crbug.com/1214923: Disallow usage of SPIR-V completely so that only WGSL is used for shader modules. This is useful to prevent a Chromium renderer process from successfully sending SPIR-V code to be compiled in the GPU process.
use_placeholder_fragment_in_vertex_only_pipeline: https://crbug.com/dawn/136: Use a placeholder empty fragment shader in vertex only render pipeline. This toggle must be enabled for OpenGL ES backend, the Vulkan Backend, and serves as a workaround by default enabled on some Metal devices with Intel GPU to ensure the depth result is correct.
timestamp_quantization: https://crbug.com/dawn/1800: Enable timestamp queries quantization to reduce the precision of timers that can be created with timestamp queries.
use_vulkan_zero_initialize_workgroup_memory_extension: https://crbug.com/dawn/1302: Initialize workgroup memory with OpConstantNull on Vulkan when the Vulkan extension VK_KHR_zero_initialize_workgroup_memory is supported.
[WebGPU Required Toggles - enabled]
disallow_spirv: https://crbug.com/1214923: Disallow usage of SPIR-V completely so that only WGSL is used for shader modules. This is useful to prevent a Chromium renderer process from successfully sending SPIR-V code to be compiled in the GPU process.
timestamp_quantization: https://crbug.com/dawn/1800: Enable timestamp queries quantization to reduce the precision of timers that can be created with timestamp queries.

lazy_clear_resource_on_first_use: https://crbug.com/dawn/145: Clears resource to zero on first usage.
[WebGPU Required Toggles - enabled]

lazy_clear_resource_on_first_use: https://crbug.com/dawn/145: Clears resource to zero on first usage.

I tested the solution from this thread.

Disabling vulcan leads to less warnings/errors, but the long starting time is still available.

using the “use-gl=desktop” leads to more lines again, but also does not lead to smaller starting time:

During the starting time of 10s the window of chrome still looks black without content. See right side on the screenshot:

Also when I start it without gpu support (–disable-gpu ), the black window is there for 10s.

Which xdg-desktop-portal files are installed? And are they running? Not sure what you need with i3wm.

I have installed xdg-desktop-portal in Version 1.18.2-1.
The xdg-document-portal.service is running.
No other packages are installed. I see there are also packages for gnome etc. But they are not installed.

Try the gtk package, it might make a difference - or it won’t

Yes, I think this is the correct one, because the thunar file-manager, which bases on gtk, is used as default file-manager.

I installed the version for the xdg-desktop-portal and restarted the service.

The good news is, that the messages with the dialogs are not logged anymore
Thanks @xircon !
The bad news is, that the browser still has the 10s black windows.

Bugger, well getting there! At work, so can’t access a linux machine, have you tried installing a DE, something light like Budgie or XFCE to see if the problem persists? You can get rid of them pretty easily.

I had installed i3wm only.
But now I have installed XFCE, too. The problem is the same when starting chrome.

At work, so can’t access a linux machine

No hurry… It is not that urgent. For good ideas I can wait  .

So I have tested the hint from @BluishHumility again.
After disabling vulkan I had still the messages including vulkan in the strings.
And after a reboot, the warnings/logs/errors are missing.

But it still needs the 10s.
Now the only output is:

INFO: Created TensorFlow Lite XNNPACK delegate for CPU.
WARNING: Attempting to use a delegate that only supports static-sized tensors with a graph that has dynamic-sized tensors (tensor#141 is a dynamic-sized tensor).

No I am really confused. I used chromium for a while and after a hang the message while having vulkan disabled at the flags.

Could not get 'vkCreateInstance' via 'vk_icdGetInstanceProcAddr' for ICD libGLX_nvidia.so.0

appeared. Something similar is already in my first post.
I didn’t see it because of so many other problems.

But my notebook does not have a nvidia gpu. (See my hardware)

On https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Vulkan I read that for nvida nvidia-utils must be installed. And it is installed!!
When I try to uninstall it, it says it can not install it because it has a dependency to cude.
But I thought cude ist nvidia only, right?

Yes, cuda is nVidia, have you installed as a dependency?

So you don’t have an nVidia card? Get rid of everything nVidia.

No, I don’t have. And I can’t remember why should I have installed something which includes nvidia dependencies.

But yes, after uninstalling cuda and nvidia-utils all 3 browsers starts imminently!!
I will check for some freezes I had before, too. But I think I can close this thread (soon).

Thank you all and especially @xircon for your help!
