Since grub issue extremely slow boots on encrypted btrfs systems

I have 3 computers, and all were setup at different times using this guide:

HOWTO - GPT/UEFI install with full disk encryption: BTRFSonLUKS with separate root, home and pkg subvolumes; hibernation with a swapfile; auto-snapshots with easy system rollback (GUI); boot into snapshots

Warning: Most of what is done here in this tutorial is now already implemented inside calamares installer! but … it can be useful for pure arch install… warning added by joekamprad 21.5.2022 Inspired by some posts from @TomZ I decided to have a (re-)go at btrfs, test its snapshot capabilities and the ease of restoring these, try different subvolume setups and check if calamares allows for an encrypted install. As a result I have decided to make the following my new default type of install…

All have samsung ssds in them and bootup from putting in encryption password to login prompt was a matter of 10 seconds at most, now it is over a minute, and for my 2 slower machines multiple minutes. During this time disk activity is pegged (hard drive light is solid the whole time).

Doing some searching I couldn’t find others that have the problem, but it’s quite annoying when rebooting or turning on from an off state, any suggestions?

LUKS slow early boot

Since the grub boot issue I have discovered my boot has become unbearable slow (again): Startup finished in 5.493s (firmware) + 1min 22.731s (loader) + 2.511s (kernel) + 8.851s (userspace) = 1min 39.587s graphical.target reached after 8.586s in userspace. I have a full disk encryption with LUKS and use brtfs. I’m aware of the other topis about this topic and the fact that early boot will not have the hardware acceleration as when using the live system. Previously I had changed the iter count…

Hello all, I recently converted from Manjaro KDE to Endeavor OS with KDE. I followed the Btrfs + LUKS installation guide. All works fine, however unlocking the partition(s) takes FOREVER. systemd-analyze reports the following… Startup finished in 19.187s (firmware) + 42.058s (loader) + 8.186s (kernel) + 2.426s (userspace) = 1min 11.858s graphical.target reached after 2.092s in userspace I am running on an AMD Ryzen 3950X with a 1TB Sabrent Rocket 4.0, so there isn’t a problem with a slow SSD…

I just now can’t venture to think, what a full-blown web-search for these (or similar) keywords might eventually come up with.

wow, that’s pretty poopie of a response.

If you read what I wrote I said that I have had no issues at all with this setup on 3 separate machines since the latest grub fiasco. So I’m not just searching for in general slow booting, my booting was fine up until the latest grub thing that seemed to have changed something. Thought I would throw that out there as I was searching for things that would have happened within the last couple weeks with other people.

Which version of grub do you have installed? The latest grub-something-4 is supposed to solve the slow boot some people have had complaints about.

It hasn’t helped the encryption issue for others.

It’s cool, I can see how it could have looked like how you thought it did.

I’m experiencing the issue on the latest ( grub-install (GRUB) 2:2.06.r322.gd9b4638c5-4 )
