A low-spec ‘integrated’ amp - that is NOT impressive. However, it can handle the volumes required for speakers located perhaps 6 feet away from the ears! I just haven’t been paying much attention to the evolution of the speaker market, and most of my ‘info’ and opinions (!) are sadly out-of-date.
For instance, I have always appreciated KEF speakers for sound - but they had an appetite for power that would not fit well this amp (not to mention being a little pricey!)
So - looking for something inexpensive, that has tone that can be fit into the ‘flat’ category (albeit with some equalization), and can actually reproduce some bass without falling to its knees. A ‘mini’ subwoofer is a possibility too (I have been running my TV with an older ‘computer’ addon set with L/R and sub and it has been surprisingly OK - but the TV is not playing much music…
If that doesn’t easily exist out there, I would be open to an Edifier setup - assuming it can be fed from, say, a tape out source…
If you can afford around 200$ for a pair the JBL 305P MKII is a real solid pair
also the fostex PM.03
Then the Edifier 1280T
and the Edifier R1700BT like i have but measurements are on page 4/5 of the 1280T thread
Those are some of your best options in the sub 200$ category if close to flat is the goal IMO. Some of those require balanced ins though ( JBL i think). The 1280Ts require some EQ work to get flatish response
I went looking for a sound bar for the big screen TV in the family room. Couldn’t find anything I liked. Ended up with this.
Two ELAC Debut 2.0 bookshelf speakers Model B6.2
S.M.S.L AD18 amplifier with bass out.
Klipsch Reference Series Model R-120SW 12" sub woofer. Makes scenes like in The Game Of Thrones and Lord of the RIngs really get your attention.
Takes up more space than a sound bar, but worth it.
Getting a bit of the price range I’m looking at, but nice stuff! After some looking around, I’ve spotted the Edifier 1280DB - which appear to be similar to the 1280T, but with enhanced response, both lower in the range, and higher. Anyone have any experience with these? They look like they’ll do the job…
What I have now is much the same size - I used them mounted in frames for the sound system in my 18-wheeler for years - and mounted on the rollbar in my 4-runner equivalent (before Toyota built 4-runners) - beofre they got retired to house duties. Smaller usually compromises the sound too much for me.
FR is 55Hz to 20KHz - the 1280T is 75Hz to 18Khz, according to the specs I’ve seen. AFAIK, Bluetooth only comes on the R1850DB and the R2000DB models. I don’t think I need it - I have Bluetooth on the integrated amp I’ve got, so I can do it that way if I want
Thanks guys - I’ll order them up now (R1280DB) and cross my fingers!
I went down a different route with a Fosi BT20A blue tooth amp, and 2nd hand mini monitors of the hifi breed with 100w per channel the amp drives any thing to high levels clean and distortion free
So I see (from another source). I guess they updated the feature set recently? What all comes in the package, if they’re wireless capable? CAN they be wired? Want them work after being through my KVM after all…
You can not go wrong with them. Well built, sounds perfectly okay for the money. Many audio inputs, BT and so on. Do not know what they cost in your country, but in Sweden they are very cheap.
Think how stupid people are who buy 1 BT speaker from Apple for much more money. Just because it’s Apple!
Hope you will be happy with the purchase! I like them anyway! But it’s a matter of taste too!
I’ll let you know how it goes - but I expect they will do the job well. For sure they will be better than trying to hook up the KEF 105s to the computers! If I really like them, I might use another as a sound upgrade for the TV as well (today’s TVs are too thin to have good sound, although this one isn’t as bad as I expected…)
OK - here’s another thing (or two) that I just got:
yes, I am trying to clean up the tangles and stretches that can be seen on my ‘battlestation’ - and these should do it. They even come with guides for running them along walls etc…
Of course - the bigger thing is the installation of the Edifier speakers mentioned above. There are already good pictures of those, so I’ll skip that - and just report that the sound is all you could hope for in that price range (relatively inexpensive - well under $200 Cdn). The bass, as far down as it goes, is adequate, and the tone is pretty good - well up to the job of providing output for a computer! Maybe not what my ADSs used to give me - but they can’t give me that any more (30% of one of the woofer cones attachment has disintegrated - and it rattles if any power is applied (not to mention the sloppiness it causes!). I’m going to try to frankenstein them (tape and spray foam!) but the replacements (Edifier 1280DB) are very good.
I took advantage of a super sale and ordered a couple of things. The first of which has arrived. A remote control gate opener. Now we just need to get it installed.
