I do buy “new” laptops all the time. I but from Lenovo’s outlet a lot, Dell’s too. So I’ll find good deals, buy a laptop, use it for a year, sell it for $150 less than I bought it. Basically 1 year lease for $150-$200. If I REALLY like it, I’ll keep it longer. But the T14 is the first laptop I’ve bought TRULY new in quite some time (last laptop I bought TRULY new was a Latitude E5450)
I bought a refurbished Acer Chromebook 14 in 2015? I think. And this one.
What makes the T14 special enough to have purchased new? And I also bought both my wife’s Macbook Pro (2015) and this T480s refurbished. I never understand the need to buy brand new when refurbished is cheaper by miles.
8 core, 16 thread AMD CPU that sh**stomps the best (current) mobile CPU’s from Intel w/ a GPU that does the same. Basically due to Covid and my NOT driving, thus saving $200/month in gas money, I had the money to afford to be able to support AMD and get a laptop the way I wanted it, instead of buying one that was as close as possible refurbished like the T495 where I couldn’t find one that had 16GB soldered AND the 400-nit LCD, so ended up only being able to get 1 of the 2 things.
Expandable RAM? They were well out of my price range currently so I didn’t really look into it much, but who knows, a couple years down the line, maybe sell off this guy and upgrade for me.
I’m having awful luck on offerup this go selling a couple computer I have. I though I was a cheap low baller, some of my offers have been absurd. One guy offered $150 for my 16GB X1 Carbon. I told him I wasn’t interested in financing. . . Any suggestions?
It has the same as your T480s, a single DIMM w/ soldered ram (which is also what the T495 has). But I got it with 16GB soldered, so was able to add a 16GB DIMM and have 32GB in full dual channel (which in the end is what I chose to go with on the T495 also, so I have 32GB dual channel, but the low end 250-nit LCD).
Nice, message me when you’re ready to sell. I’ll lowball the hell out of you and I can post up Arch desktop show cases for you for years to come. hahaha. That sounds fantastic though!
The T14 probably won’t sell anytime soon. Spending $1200 instead of $700 means that it’s going to depreciate a LOT more, so I’ll keep it longer. The T495, now that I might sell off.
Also, my new years purchases:
No, I didn’t need them (ok, the DasDah I needed, my m.2 SATA USB enclosure broke from being too heavy), but…I WANTED some NVMe external drives.
That is the correct package. I recommend reading the details on the linked git.
I will definitely look into it. I don’t really do loads with my computer, although I do want to start running some VM’s to help out a little here and there (i3/bspwm), so that may change. But working here this morning I’m clocking like 4-8gb ram and my cpu is sitting very nicely at 33-36*C, so I’m pretty content with that for now.
Definitely not as critical with an i5 variant. I do a bit of local compiling at times, and generally have a variety of containers or vm’s running, so for me I needed to optimize it a bit.
Just ordered a new case for my gaming rig. A be quiet! Pure Base 500DX. The plan is to take my current gaming rig case and replace the Cougar case that I am using on the home server. I am waiting for it to arrive and will post pictures once it arrives.
Here is a publicity photo from the company.

With lockdown mark 2 coming to Thailand wanted access to PLEX, Netflix, Steam games and the PS4 in the bedroom. It’s a bargain for all that even if I believe it is jam packed full of ads. ( will probably give my pihole quite a work out )
Will allow my son access to all our technology when I have to teach online from the living room.
What? No water cooler?
