I think the meme originated with XKCD, but it has evolved since then. This new version incorporates Cloudflare, which has had some recent outages.

General purpose vs specialised hardware in a nutshell.
As a spaceflight nerd, the Apollo guidance computer is one of the most fascinating aspects of the programme. It was a 5 bit system that was mainly programmed with conductive wires. Long time ago I played a space flight simulator that ran a hardware emulation of the guidance computer so got familiar with the programs it could run and how to use them. 15 years ago I had a lot more free time and patience
