Our professor asked us to use “Linux” for assignments, and my classmates don’t have the first idea what linux is. I’m getting such queries lately.

I’ll like that professor. However, I would ask him if he meant using just the Linux kernel for your assignments, which is simply another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX? Because, even though the kernel is an essential part of an operating system, it is useless by itself.
Or did he mean GNU/Linux?
