Second monitor not working (but gets recognized in xrandr)

Hey guys,
I’m having problems again with my second monitor. I had a similar problem with the last kde plasma update which was eventually fixed. The problem was slightly different tho. Last time the second monitor was shown before login and a profile reset could solve the problem. This time the second monitor gets no input all the time.

I run a Lenovo Ideapad 5 Pro 14ACN6 plugged into a Lenovo Universal USB-C . To that dock is connected a LG UltraGear 34GN850-B and a ASUS MG279Q as a second external monitor. Both are connected via display port. The system is up to date.

The same setup works fine with a Thinkpad t14 (4850H Edition) with Windows 10 and also with my gaming rig with Windows 11.

Thanks for the help and have a nice day!

arandr helps you to make a proper xrandr command line
omit unneccessary lines or the whole if it’s irrelevant

makedir ~.screenlayout
touch ~.screenlayout/monitor
arandr

Output (select primary monitor)
Layout Apply (Ctrl/Return)
then Save as monitor
and it makes a monitor.sh script
chmod +x monitor.sh
Insert this monitor.sh (or xrandr line) wherever suits you.

EDIT1: arandr is a utility – a community package and can be installed by pacman as well – You will see what ports are detected, change resolutions etc. You’ll see the changes by pressing Ctrl+Return and the best version can be saved to a file containing the xrandr line with an extension .sh. Your problem is harder than that, unfortunately.

Have you rebooted after update?

Do you use autologin, and if so, what happens when you logout?

In case the kernel errors about some usb device are relevant, post

lsusb -tv
inxi -a --usb

Did you try a different kernel? (linux-lts)

@eso
Thanks! So I need to install arandr from the aur first right? And then create a monitor.sh with it?

@petsam
Yes I did reboot after the updates. I don’t use autologin. When I logout nothing happens (second monitor still not working). This is different from the last time I had this problem where the second monitor was working when I logged out.

** lsusb -tv**

I didn’t try a different kernel so far, lts would probably be the best choice right.

I don’t see much difference.
Since xrandr sees the monitors properly, Plasma should as well.
You haven’t said if KDE system settings / Display can see the monitor. Look closely.
Did you delete kscreen folder?

SDDM is another story.

If nothing helps, post Xorg.0.conf and journal log from a clean boot and login (in a web pastebin service).

The last time both monitors worked fine at boot and login screen (and also when I logged out). This time the second monitor never worked/had input.

I deleted the kscreen folder (which also did the job last time).

Luckily some update from today fixed the problem :innocent:

I suspect the Kernel upgrade from 6.1.4.arch1-1 to 6.1.5.arch2-1.

I guess going bleeding edge has it’s disadvantages. Next time something doesn’t work properly I will try an older kernel first.

Thanks for everyones help and have a good day
