Screen Flickering with kernel 6.10 and AMD noted

Just did my system update and have noticed the upper half of the screen flickering in both X11 and Wayland after updating to kernel 6.10. Problem went away when I reverted back to the 6.6_LTS kernel. I am finding similar reports searching the internet. My system is all AMD so, I don’t know if would effect nVidia or Intel.

Just a heads-up and checking to see who else might be experiencing this.

…and, of course, this is why I always say, “If you’re not just running with the LTS kernel, you should have it installed as a fallback”.

Not seeing this:

Device-2: AMD Cezanne [Radeon Vega Series / Radeon Mobile Series]
CPU: 8-core AMD Ryzen 7 5800H with Radeon Graphics (-MT MCP-)

Linux xircon-legion 6.10.0-arch1-2 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Mon, 22 Jul 2024 17:28:23 +0000 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Currently running on the iGPU. Also have a RTX3070.

I also have the same problem when using both wayland and X11. Currently on my RX6400 and AMD Ryzen 7 7500x. I don’t think that Nvidia have the same issue tho.

Kernel: Linux 6.10.zen1-2
DE: KDE Plasma 6.1.3
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 (12) @ 3,60 GHz
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT [Discrete]

I have same problem after upgrading to 6.10

I do not see this issue. I have kernel 6.10.0-273.2-tkg-eevdf running since a few days and also the new arch kernel 6.10.0-arch1-2 does not have any issue on my PC.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6650 XT

Which DE are you using? I am using gnome.

Kernel: 6.10.0-arch1-2
CPU: 11th Gen Intel i5-11400F (12) @ 4.400GHz
GPU: AMD ATI Radeon RX 6800/6800 XT / 6900 XT

Terrible tearing fresh after upgrade to 6.10

Must be specific to some config or GPU as I have absolutely no issue with the latest updates. Gaming with Steam Proton and DXVK is also smoother than it has ever been with direct scanout, outperforming Windows 11:

Operating System: EndeavourOS
KDE Plasma Version: 6.1.3
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.4.0
Qt Version: 6.7.2
Kernel Version: 6.10.0-arch1-2 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 32 × AMD Ryzen 9 5950X 16-Core Processor
Memory: 62.7 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT
Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
Product Name: X570 AORUS XTREME
System Version: -CF
Mesa Driver Version: 24.1.4

I don’t have the issue either with the new kernel: 6.10.0-zen1-2-zen
DE: Gnome wayland session
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7900X
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX

No issues here with latest Arch kernel.
DE: KDE latest stable
CPU: R7 5700G
GPU: Integrated + RX 6800 XT

In my case I’m running either XFCE or Hyprland with

UPDATE: I’ve just discovered that turning AMD Freesync Premium off on my monitor alleviates the problem.

I made this account just to tell you that this was the problem indeed! Some monitors keep FreeSync enabled by default and you have to disable it from service menu. Thanks a lot!

I found this amd bug. It looks like they have already fixed it and it will be apart of a future kernel update https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/3503

Yuo, I’m definitely running a refresh rate above 144Hz. Looks like that’s the issue.

Is this article perhaps similar to your problem?

The Problem is known and it is related to Freesync and RX6000 Series. Disabling it should fix it. Yet there is also a Patch that fixes it but i have no clue how to apply ?

Here’s the Link to a Thread with the .patch file.

My advice would be wait for the patch to get incorporated into the kernel on a future update. In the meantime, just roll with the LTS kernel unless you really don’t need freesync.
