Samsung nvme firmware update: How?

Windows doesn’t use grub. Install Windows on another drive and boot Windows from that drive.

Windows ISO forces Windows installation in any drive via PCIE or SATA, It refuses to install on external USB.

But there is a special Windows Live without installation on USB stick or CD.

Did i say to install it on a usb? No!

Edit: Nothing wrong with using Hirens

In most cases, the external drives use a USB cable.

And this way, section 3.7.1

You can install Windows on an external drive. Already done with a sata ssd an sata-usb adapter.

Even on the steam deck you can install windows on a micro-sd card.

It seems to be the same instructions as in the link posted by @mbod (that I followed).
Somewhat “different wording” though.

i get the same result…No supported SSD detected for Firmware Update!!!

Fake disk? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I can’t find any firware updates for my WD m.2 drives.

Edit: Seems WD use software on Windows called dashboard to update it.

hmmm the SSD says made in Russia

But seriously I’m sure it is an original SSD, bought it in 2019 for 90 euro from azerty.nl

I know this probably isn’t what you guys want to hear.

If there is a Windows computer available, one can go the Windows route, and download Samsung Magician on Windows.

Then mount your NVME in the Windows computer and run magician.

This has always worked for me with no problems. I know this is a pain, but would take less time than anyone has invested in this topic.

Pudge

That is an interesting point. I googled that a little bit.

Looks like Samsung changed the hardware of the EVO 970 Plus at some point. The old hardware has firmware version 2B2QEXM7 and the new hardware has firmware version 3B2QEXM7.

I found a german article on this topic:

So, may be, there is no firmware update for my “old” hardware and the software just tells the truth.

Nice “detective” work and thanks for sharing the info!

Also, without your initial post and the link to the instructions in your op, I was totally in the dark as to the existence of a new firmware for this disk and and how to go about doing it under Linux. Thanks!

That assumption seems to be correct.

version 4B2QEXM7 is an update for 3B2QEXM7. But version 2B2QEXM7 never received an update.

DAMN YOU SAMSUUUUUUNG!!! Oops did I say that out loud?

I tried to wrap my head around this issue for a while, but without success.

Then I posted this topic here in the forum and the responses from all of you gave it another twist. Food for thought so to speak. Made me search the web in a different way.

I love this forum. I love how the people here are working together. Thanks!

Hear hear!!

Before I switched back to a dual-boot, I used this to install Windows on a USB so I could update the firmware of SanDisk drives: https://www.easyuefi.com/wintousb/index.html

So I have tested it now on my System.

No errors but it could not find an ssd to update.

Here is my ssd
Model Number: Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 2TB
Firmware Version: 2B2QEXM7

I booted to windows an even the last version of Samsung Magician says that my ssd is on the latest firmware.

So I believe the thesis that there are 2 different hardware revision of the 970 evo plus and the update is only for one revision.
