Becoming a teacher
Some required background:
In 1983 I was a high school sophomore. At the time my physics teacher was also the ‘computer skills’ teacher, since computers weren’t an everyday item in the class back then. Our school district had a pair of Apple II computers for the entire high school. You needed to sign up for a special program to get time to work on the computers.
So I am sitting there one day with my physics/computer teacher who is trying to show me a program on the Apple. We keep having trouble trying to log in with the old ‘invalid password’ scenario. Finally after a few tries I decided to try mis-spelled versions of the password and BINGO - we get in. So I of course mumble to myself “some dummy doesn’t know how to spell”. My teacher looks at me and deadpan says “I am that dummy, because I dropped out of school after 8th grade” … turns out he dropped out of school to work on the family farm for years before getting a GED and ultimately his teaching degree. It’s true he couldn’t spell to save his life, but in retrospect he is probably one of most practically smart people I ever met.
So yeah … the craziest thing one of my teachers ever did was drop out of school.
Not one of my teachers but the band teacher at the high school I was attending got caught and arrested for stealing the flashing lights off of a police car.
Unbearably high energy prices.
Probably me, but I swear it’ll be an accident.
It seems pretty broken to me already…
