Random System Freeze

Hey guys,

first off I really enjoy this Anteregos alternative. However since I installed Endeavouros I experience a frequent random system freeze, it just hangs up and if a sound has been played (eg a stream) then it gets looped in a 2 seconds timeframe.
The system doesnt react at all anymore and I have to cut the power to restart my pc.
I havent expierenced it on Manjaro / Mint / Ubuntu , which I used on the same Laptop before.
Also my research for a root cause of this problem wasnt successful. Some people in the arch forum suggest a kernel problem, but I couldnt find a solution.

I hope you can help me out, because I really enjoy EndeavourOS so far, beside the freeze.

Hello and welcome to the forum! :smile:
If it is a kernel issue, then you could try the LTS kernel.

sudo pacman -S linux-lts linux-lts-headers
sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
reboot

and at boot select the LTS kernel.

Welcome @Salva
It would be helpful if you could post some info about your hardware to start.

Also here is some info on posting logs.

Welcome @Salva,

Let us know which install you did, OFFLINE XFCE or another DE with ONLINE ?

First of all, thank you very much for your responses. I really appreciate it.

@FLVAL
I used the version which was aviable in November 2019. XFCE and my Laptop was connected to the internet while the install.

Thanks :slight_smile:
I will try your suggestion.

@ricklinux

I start off with the logs of the commands/links you provided me:

Have you had a chance to try the lts kernel as @manuel suggested?

@ricklinux

Yes, I am using the LTS kernel now. Since the freezing occurred randomly and the frequency can vary, I cant really say yet if it helped. Usually it froze once every 1-2 days, sometimes more often.

I will report back, in case it helped or the problem still happening.

But this is only a kind of workaround and not a permanent solution. You don’t want to be stuck with an old LTS kernel forever.

For example the last available UEFI 1.24 of the Acer Aspire ES1-131 is not flashed. This is a basis.

Furthermore the intel driver is used. You could test the modesetting driver.

Recently or newer kernels may have freezes with Intel IGPs, which can be fixed with the boot option intel_iommu=igfx_off.

I seem to have the same issue, I’ve read that there would be a bug in kernel 5.4
I also installed the LTS kernel a few days ago and the problem did not repeat itself.

I’ll try the 5.4 kernel with the altered boot option. (I added it in boot.cfg)

linux /boot/vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=6dcee954-bc8a-4034-86f5-189bf448289a rw intel_iommu=igfx_off quiet resume=UUID=31fc204a-f877-4128-b63f-ac70b0d5312e loglevel=3

Time will tell if this will work.

How does one know if it’s freezing due to kernel verses the noAccel option in x?

The easiest might be to just post the whole log of journalctl -b -1 after you boot again after a freeze. That is the previous boot and should/could show what is really happening.
Pastebin/post the whole thing when you get there next time.

Without hijacking this topic, yesterday my laptop did not have a single freeze all day, so I was hoping this was the fix I needed, but unfortunately it froze this morning after 5 minutes or so,

Are you saying this with the LTS kernel or 5.4 or it’s the same problem with both kernels ?

it can come from the pc too; me all my pcs are passed to the kernel 5.4.12 no problem

Kernel 4.19 never freezes.
I added the fix for the 5.4 kernel and this lasted for one day.

I read a topic on the Arch forum about removing the xf86-video-intel file, but am hesitating a bit.
Not sure if I’m able to boot if I do that, the modesetting driver should take over.

Edit: i removed the intel driver and am able to boot.

it is a portable pc or a fixed pc

One thing that might help is update the BIOS/firmware of the motherboard, unless it is already the latest available.
Another thing to try is change the display manager, e.g. sddm or lightdm, whichever you don’t already have.

Mine or from the TS?
