First few maps, all map connections working and most building interiors are also done
First gym leader (boss for those who don’t know pokemon)
Professor Spooky (now with a bit of transparency to make him that bit more spooky)
Have also added in weather effects for the first few maps and encounters in 1 map (these are hard to try work out, I want to keep it balanced but also give as much choice as possible). The starters have also been changed out and the first gym leader is fully scripted now too and versed and added in a nice reward for beating him. Still way off any demo but man it’s fun making this stuff.
Thanks, this is something I’d been wanting to do for ages and finally tracked down some decent tutorials to get me started. Having heaps of fun doing it and learning a lot as well.
Old Tileset
So starting the mapping process from scratch, just came across this awesome tileset that works a lot better (easier to use) than the one I was using and looks a lot nicer. No big loss as it lets me test myself to see just how much I have learnt and what to implement, I was just going to throw the new set in but that will actually be a lot more work and I would have to go through removing the old sets to save issues later on.
Looking way nicer IMO, changed out the music too. Still have to add in weather effects and a lot of of decoration but first I think I’ll map out the other 2 interiors.
Interiors are now mapped nicely.
Next step is to add in some events to give the town a bit of life and some more events to lead the player to were they need to go and stop them from advancing if they don’t go there.
Yup, it’s part of the very loose story I’ve came up with so far. The town is called The Last Safe Place and is surrounded by a sandstorm but you’ve been lied to (or have you???)
Added over the majority of scripts from the old map and fixed a few mapping errors I found (could walk out of bounds in the players house). Still need to add in an NPC to stop the player leaving town before recieving a pokemon and another to make the player walk directly into the room where the Proffesor is and 1 more to stop the player leaving the lab without the pokedex (if they want to ignore the message and not have pokeballs thats on them)
Added in the event to stop the player leaving. And added in some QOL/things to speed up the start of the game (running shoes, pokedex, pokenav and exp.all given from start and boxes are available from the party menu). Have a little bit more of the first route left to map and then onto the next town.
First route mapped out. Have the second all done on paper but I think I’ll go and add in a few trainers and items along the first route. Have narrowed down the encounter list a bit but still need to trim it a bit more (have it down to about 40 possibilites but thats too many but I know how I’m going to narrow this down).
So only narrowed it down to 35 but giving it a test in game only ran across the same encounter once in around 20 encounters so I think I might leave it like this as it will allow for teams with many possibilities and help to make each playthrough slightly different. Going to have to try implement a level cap though as if someone goes after all of them they could easily become way to OP and make the rest of playthrough too easy.
Worked that issue out nicely with a little plugin for Automatic Level Scaling with 3 modes of difficulty and have set it to only scale if the player over levels, if your under level you haven’t been playing right or I wanted that battle to be a challenge.
A short play test of the first route. Decided to give quickballs over pokeballs at the beginning to speed things up, once I get a bit better with the event handling I will probably add in a choice as to whether the player wants the quickballs or pokeballs. Next step is to map out the forest up ahead and do the interiors of the town/add some NPCs.
After somehow accidentally creating a heap of invisible walls I have finally done the next map, now to add in some trainers and encounters. It’s only a small area for now but think i might add in a few more maps with optional areas after i do the next town.
I’m using RPG Maker XP, Pokemon Essentials and GIMP. It will be for windows but i am experimenting with a few options for linux (pokemon reborn and rejuvanation use appimages so i am looking into this option).
