Problems in fresh install of EOS: screen freeze

Hello there.

I just tried installing the EndeavourOS on a new computer and I am having several problems. First of, I everything went fine until the reboot after the installation. I downloaded community wallpapers, but when I tried to change it, everything just freezes forever. I tried rebooting again, but screen just remained black. I already tried twice. I saw that in the past this issue was causes because of NVDIA drivers, but I have a RTX3060 and correctly chose the installation with NVDIA drivers. I chose KDE desktop with i3.

Any idea what might have caused this and how I could fix?

KDE with i3 has all sorts of complications you have to factor in. I’ve never (successfully) ran them together.

How did you set it up?

If you’re looking for a WM compiled into a desktop, I always recommend XFCE+i3. Please check this out if you’re interested:

Ok, I tried installing only plasma and got yet another error that did not allow the installation to finish. It says

pacman -S --neaudio pulseaudio-alsa pulseaudio-jack amd-ucode dmidecode dmraid dosfstools hdparm hwdetect intel-ucode lsscsi mtoo

returned error code 1.

What could this be? I am really lost here.

EDIT: I found the actual log and it seems that many more packages failed than the above ones, but still no solution. Full logs at: http://ix.io/3CmA

At one point during the install you were getting http 403 errors meaning your access to the Arch servers was being denied. I would suggest disabling (temporarily!) the firewall on your router and try to install plasma again. I am no expert on this but it looks like your connection to the required downloads was disrupted at some point, which would cause calamares to fail. If it’s not this then I am not sure!

Well, that did work out and the installation completed successfully, so I think you are right as my internet was unstable at that time. However, when rebooting and logging in the windows (apparently any, but notably where we find images for the background) freeze with (Not Responding) and the Window Managers windows that open do not respond too. I did another reboot and all seem to be working fine (windows, background, terminal etc). I don’t know the error, but I guess reboot for the win?

Thank you all for the help.

Yeah I did an install 2 days ago on an old spare machine (i3WM only) and it was having graphics freezing issues. After 2 reboots everything was fine. No idea why, I haven’t looked at the logs yet as that machine is unplugged at the moment :man_shrugging:

Glad you are up and running anyway

Ok, so I am back. Everything on the last install went fine (as far as I can tell, but clearly not since there is still a bug). When I try do edit the Apperance or Window Management and click “Apply” the whole system freezes and I cannot do anything. When I reboot, the change I made is applied. I also cannot turn off the computer by the “Shut Down” button. When I run journalctl -b I do see that there is something odd with my kernel. I had to delete some of the first lines due to the limit, but here is the result. As a heads up, the last line says :

My only guess is that the install had some error cause by my internet on the kernel part, but I am really clueless here. Again, any help would be wonderful as I really wanted do keep EOS, but I am getting kind of frustrated.

if this would say not corrected I would bet on hardware issue… but afaik this will be something software sided…
Not caused by a faulty install, as installer would simply fail if it can not install a package.

I would like to see the system, specs:

So we can see what device is connected to the PCIe port that is having issues… it could be the GPU card.
And is may be related to the current kernel and/or nvidia driver packages, or an issue with your Bios and latest kernel.

I dedicated some time to discovering the issue and I have done some progress. @joekampdrad is right. The port 0000:00:1b.0 is having problem as shown by the crowd journalctl that I have saying this:

kernel: pcieport 0000:00:1b.0: device [8086:a3e9] error status/mask=00000001/00002000
or
kernel: pcieport 0000:00:1b.0: PCIe Bus Error: severity=Corrected, type=Physical Layer, >

It is generating so much logs that it is consuming a LOT of my cpu power. When I run lspci -tv I get:

-[0000:00]-+-00.0 Intel Corporation Device 9b43
+-01.0-[01]--+-00.0 NVIDIA Corporation GA106 [GeForce RTX 3060 Lite Hash Rate]

So it seems to be something with my RTL8188EE Wireless Network Adapter. The wifi is working, though very slow with some frequent disconnects. Is there a way to find if it is a problem with the hardware itself or some driver? Well, this at least explains the problems I had with the install, it really had a bad internet access.

EDIT: I tried booting from the pendrive into Manjaro and Ubuntu and the error persists there, so I am pretty much sure it is something hardware problem, related with the wifi adapter.

You have r8168 driver installed?
You should uninstal it. It is causing strange issues currently. And could be other Distros using the same.

If the WiFi is a plugged can d you could try removing it.
If not possible to deactivate it in Bios.

How do I know if this driver is installed? I tried lspci -v and it says

Kernel driver is use: rtl8188ee
Kernel modules: rtl8188ee

but I am not sure if this is what you wanted. And if I do uninstall it, I suppose I would not be able to use the wifi adapter as well, which would not be ideal, as I am currently using only wifi.

this will show if this one is installed pacman -Qs r8168

In this case, yes, it is installed.

I read that using r8169 may solve the problem as per https://forum.endeavouros.com/t/solved-installation-realtek-modules-r8168-and-r8169/5658, but I have no idea how to even do that and if it will help or not.

Simple by uninstalling r8168 package… If installed it blacklist r8169

and you can load unload the modules:
unloading:
sudo rmmod r8168
loading:
sudo modprobe r8169

You don’t have r8168 card, so you can safely uninstall r8168:

sudo pacman -Rsn r8168

and reboot.

Then, with command

lsmod | grep "r816"

you can see if the machine has r8168/r8169 related kernel modules.

Your chip doesn’t use r8168 or r8169 kernel module. It uses module rtl8188ee kernel module.

Edit: You should be able to remove the r8168 as stated

yes i do start mentioning the r8168 driver only because it seems that having it installed interfere to some other realtek drivers/cards/chipsets
