(Possibly SOLVED w/590.48) FYI: Xfce and Nvidia 580.119.02

I installed 580xx driver from the AUR and it seems to work very well. Much better than nouveau. Nouveau mostly works but is much slower than 580xx.
Xfce seems to be the problem now, Plasma works well.

It is hard to tell how long 580xx will be usable, but I’d guess a few years from now.

The Arch team has published this just a few minutes ago related to the 590.* driver series, I thought it won’t hurt to create an official announcement for those being affected, as it would require manual intervention.

Yes, that’s a good idea. I’ll see to it unless @joekamprad has already started doing it.

I was going to try to do a new GNOME install with the GTX 1060 Haswell mini tower, have only used KDE in the past with old Intel integrated laptops, so hopefully it will work, will need to report back, just to try something different

I assume with the install media, I should pick the default non-Nvidia option, then install nvidia-inst and the 580 drivers from the AUR afterwards?

we will have some fun over the next week i bet
Lets have a talk anytime soon..

Please note that nvidia-inst is not ready for the recent Nvidia changes. And it does not support AUR packages.

Dont forget to install the lib32-nvidia-580xx-utils with it

For 32-bit stuff like gaming, yes.

be careful , steam 64 bits will coming , does it will works with old drivers videos 32 bits ?

I ran into the same issue with XFCE (flashing windows). I disabled the compositer in the Window Manager Tweaks and that fixed the issues for me.

The announcement and fix this I found here: https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/t/580-release-feedback-discussion/341205/944

why nvidia dev says its Xfce the trouble ?
read more carefully all report , even fedora prefers to revert on 580 095 series, you missed this one

Honestly, I did not look any further as I wanted to fix my immediate issue and share my solution to the specific v580/xfce flickering window issue.

I did switch my drivers to nvidia-open (v580), this however didn’t fix it, but did make my system in line with future updates afaik.

just for your info :
all video nvidia card series 900 / 1000 will stay with this 580 version that just ended with a serie of bug
they cant use after nvidia-open because that concerns

  • only serie 1650 or more nvidia cards
  • only wayland

so nvidia prove that they cannot freeze on end a version driver stable for a long term

they are many desktop & laptops with theses series cards
