Same here with Xfce and GeForce 1030, random flickering at times, sometimes more, sometimes less.
Seems that it depends on which apps are currently using the screen.
Downgraded to nvidia-dkms 580.105.08-5 with all related Nvidia packages, and now it works well.
On Plasma/Wayland (after short test) all seems to work well. No flickering like with Xfce/X11.
This is the same installation, I have both Xfce and Plasma installed.
On Xfce the flickering started immediately.
Edit: I’m now on Plasma/x11. No flickering. So seems to be an Xfce+Nvidia problem?
Wayland works fine with nvidia. Not a single issue here. My second gaming notebook performs way better with wayland then with x11. That one has a gtx 1070. Wayland = super smooth. X11 = laggy.
I’ve been meaning to try out Wayland and another DE but when I decided to install EndeavourOS I selected XFCE because I’m familiar with it and I just wanted to try out the distro to see if I want to fully commit to it and yeah I did like EndeavourOS enough as my main OS.
Anyways, I want to know how is it is to install Wayland and another DE along side my current X11 + XFCE setup. I would like to switch between them for situation like this where Nvidia or XFCE are having issues, which I am also experiencing after updating my Nvidia drivers last night, and also see performance/functionality differences.
Is there a guide or something to help me have the same setup as yours?
Well I am running wayland on xfce now and it works only to a certain extend, because it is only experimental.
To get wayland working your best bet would be to install labwc , and if you logout and next login you would have a wayland option available om the login screen. Just click on the icon next to your user name and you would get a drop down menu. But it has a number of limitations, that are mentioned on this site. For good measure I don’t have Nvidia hardware.
As @keescase mentioned, package labwc (or similar) is needed for having Wayland with Xfce. And the Wayland support is still experimental, but has been getting better gradually. I’m using Xfce with Wayland with writing this post.
To install both Xfce and KDE there’s the tool eos-packagelist that can help.
It can list and install the basic set of packages needed for those desktops.
So if you already have Xfce, run
eos-packagelist --install KDE-Desktop
to install Plasma. Note that you may need more KDE packages depending on what you want to do.
And in case of any trouble/conflicting packages/etc. note which packages get installed. That info can be found in the log /var/log/pacman.log.
