Pop! OS 24.04 is out, but

Is it possible to add a new category for Cosmic in the desktop environment ? it does not have a category and i am sure there are people wanting to try it.

I mean a sub category for the forum

Just tested Pop! OS 24.04 in a live enviroment, i am impressed they are on kernel 6.17.9 (which is not even a LTS-Kernel)… but that was it. Got bored very fast duo missing configurations that i got used too in KDE.

I was once a Pop! OS user but since i use Endeavour OS i don’t want anything else.

Cosmic packages 1:1.0.0-1 are currently in Archlinux Extra-Testing repo

No more Beta!

PopOS was a stepping stone for me also, though I changed because of that stupid message in Firefox settings, ā€œManaged by Your Organizationā€. For the longest time the devs opted out of enterprise policies, but at some point they give in, and took the easy way out. I chatted with one of the devs, and he told me it was because Firefox updated at different times blah blah blah. You are right. It became boring.

Really? Looks like it’s still beta, when reading most of the comments on Reddit.

They should have waited until 26.04, which is just around the corner. Ubuntu 24.04 is ancient at 1 year and 8 months old.

Yeah, the timing is indeed a shame, but maybe it only looks like that because of our Arch perspective? I mean most of their customer base was still on 22.04 :frowning:

Probably. Spoiled by the rolling release cycle, I suppose.

PopOS on vmware

Cosmic on EOS would have to be setup better in order for me to like it compared to PopOS. I just did a quick install on vm to check it out. I don’t know all the things needed to be added and set up to make it similar without spending a lot of time.

Edit: I don’t see any system settings and other things?

Then I’m guessing you didn’t get all the packages installed. I thought there was a meta package, but I’m not seeing it in a quick look.
But from using it on Cachy, there are things required that aren’t properly done (like polkit comes to mind), so you can’t (as normal user) open another drive. I’m hopeful that whoever packages for Arch will look at it again with 1.0 release.

Edit: Looks like group ā€˜cosmic’ should pull most if not all in.

I’m showing this on my COSMIC system, used yay -S cosmic:

That means any EnOS user can contribute, including the package list.

Just fork the cosmic repo, make your suggested changes, then do a Pull Request.

sigh That sounds like work though….I might do it over the holidays if noone else does.

The package list for Cosmic currently includes gnome-keyring. I assume that should take care of polkit? I haven’t actually tested it yet.

Well I did a fresh install about a week and a half ago and noted problems…but since blew it away. I’ll probably fire it up in a VM vs possibly breaking my working installation and try to figure out what all it may need.

Cosmic on vmware is really good. All I’m saying is that I would need it to be setup on EOS like it is on PopOS in order for me first of all to like it and or use it. I think it’s ready and would be a great addition if it was configured properly.
