I need some (maybe a lot of) help from someone. My ex-boyfriend installed EndeavourOS with I think ubuntu on my computer years ago but since we broke up I have no one close who can help me with this stuff.
Tonight I just wanted to use my laptop and something happened, I genuinly don’t have a clue what, and after a while my screen went to the ‘Oh no! Something has gone wrong’ screen. I did some googling and I know how to access the terminal (?). My ex learned me that to update something i’d need to use ‘yay -Syu’ so i did that, lots of stuff happened but I still can’t access my laptop.
I’m aware that this is so vague but I don’t understand anything that has to do with this stuff. So I would really appreciate someone helping me
Hi! I tried my best but I truly have no idea how this all works. I typed in the commands in the link you sent but I don’t get the output that it shows in de link.
Okay, I’m getting confused. I don’t know what a live environment means.
But I can’t get into my computer at all. When I try to start it, it gets stuck on a black screen with an _ or I get the white screen with ‘Oh no! Something went wrong’
Then I did the ctrl+alt+f3 and fill in my login and password and then this is kind of where I ended up. I tried some things that other people said but thats obviously not working…
do you have a usb thumb drive with the ISO on it? that is where you get a live environment from. You need to boot up to the usb disk and load the OS on the ISO into memory.
Nope, my ex did all that stuff. I do have empty thumb drives at my house but not another computer on which I can download the os and put it on the drive with. Since it’s late where I live the earliest I can get access to a computer is in the morning.
Since I have no knowledge about any of this, would you recommend to put endeavouros back on or to switch to something else like windows thats easier to use?
It really depends on what kind of computer user you are, and how much you are willing to learn. But I would definitely say you should NOT use EndeavourOS if you decide to continue using Linux. This is because it requires you to maintain it and keep it up-to-date, while also troubleshooting issues a regular user may find too difficult.
Instead, a new-to-Linux user would be better off at first with Linux Mint or Ubuntu Studio. These do much of the heavy lifting for you, including updating your BIOS (motherboard software), giving you a “pretty” software centre, etc.
Choose Linux Mint if you just want something that works.
Choose Ubuntu Studio if you do art, music, 3D, video editing, etc.
I would take the computer to someone who is a bit more knowledgeable to get your files off and maybe put windows on if that is what you know. If you are interested in Learning Linux then you can but for Now I would stick to what you know.
Getting external help is probably a good idea if possible.
But we booted into the system and are in the user account, so the filesystem is there. Seems like only the graphical desktop environment doesn’t start. Can’t be that hard to fix.
In this case it has nothing to do with how hard or easy it is to fix it is the users ability to perform the task.
Really a good case of why people should just leave other peoples stuff alone no matter how good the intention the user knows nothing of the OS and is unable to solve the solutions themselves in most of these cases.
So Guys until you put a ring on her finger keep your OS off her Computer.
Jeez. Apparently the computer did run for years and was updated by her. Do we pretend that other operating systems never break? If there is still data on the device she can probably thank the ex because it’s not forever lost behind Windows Home TPM bitlocker.
So let’s not gatekeep an OS behind requiring a boyfriend, OK.
You are more than free to help the Op if you wish. No one is preventing you. However that doesn’t seem to be your desire your desire seems to just want to ARGUE with me.
Have a nice life I’m not going to entertain you any further.
