Some great new features and QoL options coming in, - from a visual impairment perspective, the center mouse while zooming is massive (pun intended!), and I’m quietly giggling about the option being added to disable the notification timers if they stress you out (How did they know!?)
6.6.0 is looking to be an amazing release this Feb! It blows my mind how Plasma consistently improves month on month. I remember the days of KDE4 and having to jump ship to XFCE to get a decent and consistent/reliable experience. Plasma has matured into a platform that is without doubt, worth its reputation, more so with it recently having been adopted as the DE of choice by Valve for their Steam kit, and other orgs as a dev environment (Weta Digital, CERN, ILM, Mercedes Benz).
From what I can tell, it’s already shared with someone else, and there’s a defined format for it for a collaborative effort. I’m guessing it takes a decent chunk of time to collate these single-handedly, as well as editorialise. But they’re great to read through because often they’d otherwise get missed no doubt.
This part really got my interest… On the widget and panel front, Plasma 6.6 adds several user-facing enhancements. Users can now create global themes from their current visual settings, making customization easier.
You’re supposed to also activate core-testing and extra-testing when using kde-unstable. 99% of the time kde-unstable is fine without them (should be fine right now), but sometimes it will bite you.
Don’t use --noconfirm. It’s dangerous on a normal update, but you probably want to have a “let’s abort, that looks wrong”-opportunity when activating testing/unstable (should be fine right now too).
Enabling kde-unstable and a sys update was not enough.
yay plasma-meta added the missing new packages of the 6.6-1
enabled plasma-login-manager service
reboot
and plasma-login-manager is active
However, the secondary monitor orientation was not adjusted to work in portrait mode.
The background screen of plasma-login-manager is the default latest EOS one.
It is simple config fix
Plasma Login Manager was a little bit wonky here too (black screen on one monitor, suddenly hiding the input field). Wouldn’t be surprised if a rotated display causes issues too. First release and beta: time to file some bug reports.
But overall, after a day, I didn’t run into any major issue with the 6.6. beta. Looks good so far here.
