Opening steam crashes laptop

I have Endeavour Mercury installed on my Thinkpad, and I have tried installing steam from flatpak and from pacman, but when i open it then it crashes, if it doesnt crash, then going to another tab on steam does make it crash. I’ve updated my system, and when installing steam, i install the vulkan-radeon packages for steam, because my Thinkpad has an AMD CPU/iGPU. Someone, please help

Welcome to the community! :enos_flag: :vulcan_salute:

Need some clarity here:

  • Does your laptop crash?
  • Or does Steam crash?

Also, have you met Ted?

And lastly, please post the outputs of the following:

inxi -Fxxc0z
pacman -Q | grep -A 0 -E "(nvidia|amd|intel|linux|headers)"

Firstly, my laptop crashes. secondly the output of those commands are, respectively:

Hmm. Seems I missed this one or forgot to respond.

Let’s try the previous LTS kernel:

yay -Syu linux-lts66 linux-lts66-headers

Next thing is that your BIOS hasn’t been updated since 2023. Is that a choice? I checked Lenovo’s site, but it doesn’t allow me to see if updates are available. So, you can try checking for updates by reviewing the following link:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Flashing_BIOS_from_Linux

If you still have Windows installed, you can use/install Lenovo Vantage to update your BIOS.

i installed the AMD AMDVLK drivers and it fixed it! thank you very much. and with the bios, i will update it soon, i thought that since it was so old, then it wouldnt have updates?

there is a newer update that looks like it was release just a couple of weeks after your version
https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds503790-bios-update-utility-bootable-cd-for-windows-10-64-bit-thinkpad-e485-e585

do i download the bios update iso and boot from it and use it? and it will work for and e585/e485 regardless of os or serial number? (lenovo website was asking for serial number)

I would read the documentation on the Lenovo website for what they recommend if you do not know what you are doing. Other wise I always just download the firmware update and boot into Hirens and update from within that windows environment. I didn’t pay a whole lot of attention to what the update was just saw that it was a newer version than the one you seem to have.

so i just decided to reinstall endeavour completely, however it still freezed and crashed, only one time, but still. also, with the bios, the one on the website is the same version as the one i currently have? what can i do? also, ps, when i installed endeavour again, i didnt install the lts kernels, and changed to grub instead of systemd, i decided to install the lts kernels after the install and an option to load into them is not appearing on grub.
Please help, thank you

If you’re having hardware or firmware issues, reinstalling an OS/distro will never fix the issue. Unless it’s firmware-related and the OS/distro automatically installs a firmware update for you.

When you install a kernel, you may need to regenerate your GRUB config.

sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Before you do the above, though, please show the output of the below:

pacman -Q | grep -A 0 -E "(grub|systemd|dracut|mkinitcpio|linux|headers)"

ok, so i just tried updating the bios, and it says it doesnt need updated. also i did fix the boot option not appearing problem. But my installation is still crashing frequently. what do I do, please help me

Have you done a disk check?

wait, i think i know why its crashing so much now. my installation is running on an old 480 gig ssd. when i had my installation on my nvme, it wasnt crashing at all. Thank you!

Edit: my computer kept crashing. changing the ram fixed it, thank you

UPDATE: my laptop is still crashing Is it normal for endeavouros to crash so much? - #15 by ElmBroken
Please help, thanks in advance
