Having such an old card, I always installed EOS or Arch with the open drivers, then switched to the closed ones once I got to the desktop of the installed distro.
I found that this was a “safer” procedure, as it usually worked. Also, installing the closed drivers doesn’t necessarily mean installing the dkms version, so since I wanted those, I always installed the open version of the distro first, then switched to the closed one.
