No HDMI sound & network pain

I wanted to quit Microsoft and their arrogant ways of not giving a dam about what their customers want and so I started Linux distro hopping in April 2025. One of my first was EndeavourOS which I quite liked although I had some installation pain. After that I moved on to other pastures. I am now a little bit more familiar with Linux gremlins and I’ve just tried EndeavourOS again, this time with an online installation and I surprisingly got kernel 6.17. But then I tried for 3 days to solve 2 major problems, a) no HDMI sound and , b) no network. This is a big disappointment.

Here is my question :

Did the brick wall need to be so high?

Linux Mint, Fedora Kinoite and Neptune 9 instantly found my NAS out of the box and Mint even silently installed my printer. I still haven’t found the solution to the apparently teething & persisting HDMI sound problem in many different distros since all those so-called “solved” forum entries got me nowhere.

NFS is of Unix heritage, so why is it so difficult to make it work? I probably need to study for another six months before being able to edit fstab with mount points and all that with root rights. Doing an NFS share on my NAS was very easy. Apparently most distros connect to networks with CIFS, which is pure Windows stuff. Why is that so? I can’t figure it out. Why did it take 20 years to adopt Wayland? I can’t figure it out.

Last but not least, since Linux doesn’t have USB drivers I can’t connect my amplifier/DAC and therefore I’m obliged to keep at least one Windows PC just to listen to my music collection.

I’ll keep on trying more distros and settle for Linux only when I won’t need to spend an awful amount of time in those “solved” forum entries. I can’t help but convincing me that when they say “Linux is about choice” it actually means wasting a lot of time digging deep into that choice!

In the meantime I’ll debloat Win 11 with those boring registry hacks. At least, Windows does not have HDMI sound or network/NAS problems!

Cheers

ok those are NOT build it yourself systems. ARCH is.

Its also for those WILLING to do the work.

Sorry but We are not a BEGINNER FRIENDLY distro. We are ARCH with sane defaults. Arch is a Build it yourself system. That is for those who wish to have more control over their system instead of having some over paid nerd decide for you. (now that will just be a machine from here on out)

I think Distrowatch will have some answers for you.

:thinking:

Of the various installs I’ve done of EndeavourOS over the past couple of years, I’ve never needed to search for USB drivers. From my 2021 Samsung laptop to my late 2014 Mac-mini to my current MSI custom build… USB worked out-of-the-box.

I don’t know how you did your install, but if you have no USB drivers, then there’s something off. Of course it can be so that you have hardware so exotic, that there are no compatible drivers for it, but I highly doubt this. Personally I have never have had any issues considering USB compatibility.

If you are genuine about this and not simply trying to start a fight, you could provide info about your harware etc. so we could try to help you.

EOS is not necessarily best distro to start your journey with; however if you are willing to learn and are not afraid using terminal and getting know some tricks, then it can be beginner friendly one.

I’m sorry that you have had so many issues, but you have not really provided us with much info to get into these issues of yours.

@Jack.S, run this in your terminal: inxi -Fxxc0z | eos-sendlog. You’ll be provided with a link to share here containing your hardware info.

I maybe wrong however I don’t think Jack came here for help I think he came just to complain. No where in the OP does he even ask for help just complains that it works there but not here crap.

But I actually hope I’m wrong and they do provide needed information.

Only question that was asked.

I feel the same. Time will tell.

I find it also really odd, that if he installed system like it should be done, there’s option to install printer support, and even extra package for HP ones. I have wireless printer and have not had issues with it. So I’m leaning toward either rage baiting or simply complaining about everything.

Can’t be much more difficult than installing on an 27” imac! A little perseverance, a question here and there etc. all sorted. Two imacs sorted ,a 2013 and a 2015 model.

My NAD amplifier/DAC connects to Windows thanks to a USB driver. I can’t do this in Linux.

Maybe if you gave the information requested people would be able to actually help you. Many people run usb DAC’s and work fine under Linux.

It asked indeed if I wanted cups and I ticked that box. Most distros I tried install printers very easily so at least printing is not an issue. It’s an irony though, that printers in Windows are a persistent pain and always have been! ;->

I’ve tried quite hard but to no avail. Even contacting NAD tech support. They just said : Sorry, you’re on Linux … Without this snafu I could have dumped Microsoft for good!

so are you just going to refuse the request for the information? OR are you really just here to complain that you lack knowledge and its Linux’s fault?

maybe this should be closed if your not here for help.

Ah, so it’s Windows only hardware, you have a few options:

  • Keep using Windows (the simplest)
  • Sell the NAD and buy something Linux compatible (annoying but doable)
  • Keep nagging the manufacturer to provide Linux drivers (I think your SOL in this case)
  • You could search the Internet to see if there’s a community built driver which is possible, but if there is one it may need building from source.

@thefrog

Do you know by happy coincidence know how to solve the issue of “no HDMI sound”? And how about connecting to my NAS? Any help is warmly appreciated. Thanks in advance :slight_smile:

The reviews about EndeavourOS said : Arch made easy. I even told my friends “Hey, I run Arch, BTW!” We had a good laugh!

@Dinomonster

Like my title says, the issue is what happens after a clean bare metal install: No HDMI sound & network pain.
I had indeed lots of boot issues but finally got there. My PC is an HP EliteMini 10th Gen Intel. Nothing exotic at all! I first tried in March, when I was a newbie. By now I hope I’m not a newbie anymore. Eight month later my EndeavourOS still has no HDMI sound and still can’t connect to the network. When I try the next EOS version I’ll keep track of how many hours/days I spend in the forums (especially those with a header saying: SOLVED). For how long should a user try to solve no sound or networking problems? I mean, for those guys who are WILLING.

@Jack.S
You need to provide the hardware info to start. Post the link to this command if you have internet. This is the place to start.
