Hello. I’ve been having a very annoying problem for a few days. I’m using a laptop with an external monitor. But some time after booting, both the built-in screen and keyboard of the laptop start turning on and off again and again. And sometimes they even completely turn off and there’s nothing I can do. On top of that, the wifi keeps turning off by itself as well and I have to re-enable it every time in the settings. I have no idea what’s causing this and how to fix it and my PC is unusable as is.

First please post your inxi, so we know what your systems hardware is

My first guess to the monitors turning on and off would be that there is a connection issue (from the cable).. look both on laptop and monitor if it’s plugged all the way in. If yes, maybe you have another cable at hand to test?
The other guess would be a driver issue, thats where your inxi would come in handy..
About the wifi, distance and objects can for shure be an issue (that is something I personally deal with as well)… Else it could also be drivers.. or wifi power-saving feature?

For the screen issue, I’ve tried another cable but it doesn’t seem to be the issue. It occurs even when no external monitor is plugged.
As for the wifi, I haven’t configured any wifi power-saving settings. The issue isn’t that it disconnects, it completely disables wifi every few seconds.
You are using the LTS-kernel, have you tried the mainline kernel? Or the zen-kernel?
Also are you using a gpu-switching tool? Like prime or envy-control? With some laptops that don’t have a physical switch or a setting for it in the bios that is needed.
About the wifi… There I have no idea, but I have seen some posts, some also recently, that mediatek chips sometimes cause issues on Linux. This one like here is older. But just an example.
I’m not sure what driver you would need, or if you have the correct one already installed but it may have a issue right now, maybe it’s gone with the next update, or maybe a different kernel could help.

It seems switching graphics mode from hybrid to nvidia with EnvyControl and installing a new Mediatek driver fixed both issues (so far at least).

If the Problems are gone always make shure to mark the comment that solved it as solution, then it also gets shown right on top at the post and the thread gets marked as solved as well.
So people with similar issues have a easier time finding solutions to their problems, and also people wanting to help see right away that this one is solved 
Unless there are still issues then of course we need to investigate more into this
