Hi everyone, I just got a new laptop, and my wifi card sucks… I currently can’t have the option to change a wifi card right now so I would try to find everything that can work on my laptop to work
My wifi card (according to the Windows device manager) is MediaTek Wi-Fi 6E MT7902 Wireless LAN card
and apparently, I finally found these unofficial projects that do something about it
and the problem is… hell, I don’t know how to use this thing or do anything about it I could take a little bit of risk to find anything to work without touching my wallet ._.
Thanks for reading and helping me out ^^
As mediatek wifi mt7902 wifi 6E works fine in windows 11, however linux does not implemented its driver as it is new and mediatek does not respond to making a driver for linux.
Mediatek has been very slow to get many of their WiFi drivers working properly in Linux of late. It could be a long wait before your present Mediatek WiFi adapter receives full Linux driver support. I would suggest purchasing an older USB Atheros N model WiFi adapter until your internal adapter’s driver is functioning properly. Buying a cheap older Atheros USB adapter based on the ath9k driver will give you rock solid Linux support. It will however be considerably slower than recent USB offerings, but it should be adequate for most internet activities, (unless you are a gamer).
You must be aware that there are frequently Linux driver support issues with many newer USB WiFi adapters. It can unfortunately take quite some time for manufacturers to work the bugs out of their newly released Linux WiFi drivers. There are newer USB WiFi adapters that work perfectly well with Linux, however there are also many that don’t. You must do your research very thoroughly when making any WiFi purchase intended for use with Linux. Otherwise you may end up with another dud on your hands, so buyer beware.
It’s possible that it may work, but it’s pretty sad if we have to resort to using the Windows driver to get Mediatek adapters to work in Linux. Mediatek is supposed to be a company that supports open source drivers. I haven’t had to use NDISWrapper for a Wifi driver in like 15 years. I didn’t think NDISWrapper was even working anymore with Windows drivers released after Windows 7.
If NDISWrapper is working with newly released Windows drivers again, then NDISWrapper must have been updated for compatibility sometime lately. The Arch Linux page says NDISWrapper was updated on 2024-07-13, but NDISWrapper’s homepage says NDISWrapper was last updated on 2020-05-03. I had pretty much considered NDISWrapper obsolete for quite some time now, and didn’t think it was actively being developed anymore.
If the Mediatek mt7902 is working with the Windows driver and NDISWrapper then I guess that’s better than no Linux driver at all. That just seems like a huge step backwards if Linux users need to resort to that old method for getting their WiFi to work with Linux. Kind of disappointing that Mediatek is leaving their Linux users flapping in the wind these days.
new update here and I have had enough of this and bought a new intel wifi card to replace and everything works again… but if anyone decides to provide support of it for Linux I maybe to send the old card for development purposes
