Kodi Audio Problems after recent update

Hello.

I’m relatively new to endevouros and linux in general.
Today I updated using yay to try install the new nvidia drivers.

My audio is now completely messed up.

my pc is connected to my tv via hdmi. I use kodi to watch tv. Up until now it has been fine.
Now, when I load kodi and try to watch a video there is no sound.

If I go back to the system, I can’t get sound at all, unless I have the volume mixer open. If I don’t have it focused the sound goes away, distorts or repeats etc.

Does anyone have a suggestion of how to troubleshoot?

Welcome to the community! :vulcan_salute: :enos_flag:

In your file manager, go to “.local/state/wireplumber” and rename the folder to something like “.local/state/wireplumber-bkp”.

Or from a terminal:

mv .local/state/wireplumber .local/state/wireplumber-bkp

After this, reboot your computer and test your audio again.

Why do this? You should have also received an audio package update for “wireplumber/pipewire”. This may be the cause of the issue. Renaming this folder and rebooting causes your system to automatically recreate the folder with the updated default settings.

Thanks, but this does not work.

Yay had some new nvidia drivers. Possibly a patch. Problem is still here.

If I start system, use firefox, navigate to youtube etc. Audio seems to work.
If I open Kodi, try to play a video, all system audio stops.
Only way to get system audio back is to toggle output from digital stereo to digital surround and back again.

Messing with these settings occasionally leads to apps only making a noise if the audio panel is open, and when loosing focus there is distortion, repeating etc.

I see. What’s the output of the following commands?

inxi -FGAz

and

pacman -Q | grep -A 0 -E "(wire|pulse|nvidia|intel|amd)"

When posting the output here, after pasting it, please select it again and press CTRL+E or click the button highlighted below.

I have the problems also full Amd laptop looks like the have switched something pro audio is just broken again.

What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

Fixed the issue.

How?

Just install this !

sudo pacman -Syu alsa-utils
sudo systemctl enable --now rtkit-daemon

And when done reboot then audio will be fixed , found the fix on the arch forum.

Good luck.

Thanks, but didn’t work.

Problem persists

change to different sink ?

Its mashed up pro audio at the moment

just do this and look what happens.

pactl list short sinks

pactl list short sources

Do you have no audio at all or only when you open for example a browser and play a video ? because i had that issue. for some strange reason my sinks did switch all the time.

If I boot into the system and use browser, games or freetube there is audio.

When I open Kodi, initially, I hear menu sounds, however when I try to play videos, there is no audio and this kills all audio for other apps.

After this, if I have the volume mixer up - I can hear audio, if I unfocus it, the audio goes away, or distorts, or repeats.

The only fix is to change the device to something else, then change it back. however, if I do, and try to use Kodi again, it breaks the system in a similar fashion.

open your browser play a video give these two commands and do the same if you close the browser and try to ply something with kodi i think then you will also see some kind of weird switch for example your default audio sink stays in SUSPEND mode. i had that problem to.

pactl list short sinks

pactl list short sources

I can hear the audio only if the “volume control app” is open, or I’ve clicked on audio volume in the task bar

Audio works for a little while if the volume control app is open, but goes away after say, a minute. It’s not as you would expect, there is still distortion etc, so it’s not a fix to simply leave it open all the time

what happens when you are in kodi and switch in the kde settings to a different audio setting , because it looks like you have same sort of issue i have. if kodi crashes all meaning connection between pipewire and piwire-pulse get lost you can check that with by opening pavucontrol for example.

if I type that into terminal, it loads the volume application from KDE settings.

Audio works (for a little while) but goes away when I close out

yeah that is nomal if you open it from within the terminal .

wpctl status
Ensure that WirePlumber is active and that it lists the correct audio devices, sinks, and sources.

set the default sink ! wpctl set-default

systemctl --user restart wireplumber

check logs for errors.
journalctl --user-unit wireplumber.service
