KDE Plasma 6.4 Released!

Imagine being on KDE Plasma 6 with X11 and dealing with associated bitrot in 2025.

I’m out of town for a few days and will be trying to catch up with work afterwards, so hopefully I’ll be able to update soon, or maybe just wait for the point release sometime next week

Updated this morning, all seems to be working. Except one plasmashell crash/autorestart.

Upgraded to 6.4 and it’s mostly fine. I’m seeing the occasional something happening with my dock out of the corner of my eye. It’s not a restart though.

Edit: I’m starting to think I imagined it as when I keep my eye on it, nothing happens!

Is it normal that x11 option is not available at login anymore.? I’m sure you wayland boys and girls are happy about this new plasma 6.4 feature… :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

My upgrade was …interesting…after the first reboot, my panels didn’t come up and my network either.
2nd reboot, everything seemed fine.
However, 3rd reboot was back to no panels and no network.
I dug around this time and it’s probably due to me having issues with wpa_aupplicant and using iwd instead. I may have sorted it out…it seemed that Plasma reenabled wpa for me.

Yes, the X11 client is no longer installed unless you manually install it. Part of the X11 deprecation and code simplification project.

Thanks. Installing plasma-x11-session did it… :+1:

Updated and rebooted; all is well.

I also installed kwin-x11, which was mentioned during the installation of KDE 6.4

Interesting. So i guess on a fresh install it will only have Wayland now?

Unless you choose the X11 package…yep.

We will probably deal with that in the installer.

That’s what I was thinking.

You don’t need to, it is a dependency of plasma-x11-session

New optional checkbox in the installer for plasma “install x11 session”?

WARNING: STUPID QUESTION BELOW…

Sorry, I’m confused. I’m running i3 with X11. Is there anything I need to be doing going forward? Is Wayland even an issue in this case? Perhaps this only matters some day if I do a fresh install?

After sudo pacman -Ss plasma-x11-session I get nothing in response, so if I do need to do this manual install I’m not likely up to speed on what’s required. :man_shrugging:

No, this only impacts KDE/Plasma users.

That is because your database probably isn’t updated yet.
