KDE Keeps Proprietar Formats But Removes Libre/Free Formats

I had to install qt-avif-image-plugin-libavif-git in order for gwenview to open avif image. This replaced libavif with libavif-git.

The plugin is supposed to be used for several KDE applications, not only Gwenview.

I installed these :

yay -S gwenview kimageformats libavif

and had no problem to open avif files.

Okay I’ll try that.

.avif files are stored in the HEIF container format! So you are using a proprietary format without even knowing it! Who uses avif anyhow, what’s wrong with .jpeg, or .png which you would have a hard time finding any program that can’t open them, which you risk with .avif

I use it daily, it’s fantastic.

Not really, .avif is absolute beast of both lossless and especially lossy compression, it’s 2-3 times smaller than comparable visual quality of.jpg and widely supported, also it’s open format and libavif is free & open-source.
