KDE gone black after todays update:

Upon reboot I see no menu bar, no icons, nothing.

But it also did not work, I can try anything as the system is versioned with timeshift

Got the same issue today, after updating. I also use a NVIDIA GPU with 3 displays. However I don’t have any X11 packages installed. I only use Wayland.

you should use nvidia-open-dkms instead, Nvidia development will push latest functions and changes for latest devices only into that one.

Forced to use wayland after x11 buggy with nvidia update, now kde is gone. xD

This issue is also affecting a desktop running an AMD 9070XT.

For anybody who needs an immediate workaround, you can open your terminal with the ctrl+alt+t shortcut, and run eos-shifttime to revert the update.

Someone in reddit claims to have pinpointed the issue:
"For me it was a mismatching llvm-libs .
I downgraded manually to v. 19.1.7-2 (had that locally and then I got into x11. ¨

I’m working now and cant test but someone might be able to take a look.

I saw that thread, it really doesn’t make any sense. On my KDE system, I upgraded today with no issues. The package mentioned was updated on 2025-07-02, so I don’t see how it’s the culprit.

This system is Wayland-only, with nvidia-open-dkms.

I updated my AMD laptop today (AMD, no Intel/Nvidia) and encountered the issue. On login, KDE desktop crashes and loads a few times before finally giving up.

System logs show a plasmashell segfault in libQt6Qml.so.6.9.1.

In my case, I was able to resolve the issue by setting my Plasma rendering backend to the default (“Automatic”). I had set it to “Software” to address GPU memory consumption issues, impacting some applications.

I reverted the Renderer to it’s default by:

Editing ~/.config/kdeglobals.
Removed this section entirely:

[QtQuickRendererSettings]
SceneGraphBackend=software

Save and reboot.

May be a different issue, but I just thought I’d mention it, just in case. If you’re running KDE, I’m surprised you wouldn’t have the ~/.config/kdeglobals file though.

Same issue here. I updated today after one week without accessing my computer. After logging in Plasma started, flashed (like it’s stopping then trying to restart once or twice), then stopped. So I ended up with a black screen and needed to start windowed programs through keyboard shortcuts.

I run on nvidia proprietary drivers with an old GTX970, single screen. I use Wayland.

Thank’s @laughterkills for the eos-shifttime advice, it saved me for today… I reverted to July 11th and everything works properly again. Here is the downgrade part of paclog:

No nvidia nor firmware packages were downgraded, so I suppose KDE update from 6.15 to 6.16 was responsible for breaking Plasma. I haven’t found this issue mentioned in any other distros forums though, but maybe they aren’t running this version of KDE yet?

This also solved the issue for me on X11 with a nvidia 3060.
