In 2021 What DE are you using or switching to?

The changes make a good impression to me, so I’m looking forward to them. Will see…

I just bounced back over to Plasma from GNOME when 5.21 got released and I’m quite happy. Still have a soft spot for gnome, but I was getting tired of some extension weirdness that I was experiencing. It’s possible I was trying to bend GNOME a little too much to how I wanted to operate whereas GNOME expects YOU to do the bending.

Quite happy with my Plasma setup at the moment.

Anything other than Windows!

Plasma or Sway, depending on mood/needs.

I gotta be honest, I’ll take Windows over Gnome at this point. Gnomes design is just that bad for how I want things to work, that Windows is actually easier to use.

I can agree on that. I don’t do Gnome.

Have you ever tried LXQt?

I have. Definitely not as mature as a lot of them, missing some functions, but good looking IMO, and VERY responsive. Since I’m a fan of KDE thus use many qt apps, LXQt fits in well with me, as most apps I already use will just slide right in with very few additional libraries to be installed. It’s definitely not as well-behaved in my testing (although it’s been a bit since I used it, so this may be different now) as the larger DE projects.

Plasma. Always have preferred KDE, and despite my best efforts and attempts at getting to appreciate Gnome I just can’t.

I have used LXQT. It’s okay but i prefer Plasma. Xfce, Cinnamon or Mate are also on the list. I can say though i do like the i3 setup as it is now. I find it very easy to navigate being a non tiling WM user coming from mostly desktop environments. I will like sway and Bspwm if they get all the issues worked out and are like i3. Not sure i would totally switch to them but i3 has grown on me a bit so i definitely will keep trying them.

Is there a new i3 Community iso, would love to try that out. :+1:t3:

Your issues with sway may actually be with the kernel! Elloquin and I saw a elimination of all the mouse and key problems when we switched to zen. The installation know also contains the zen kernel as an option! Perhaps those will solve your problem!

i3 is in the online installs. I like the changes that were made to it. It’s much better for the novice who has no tiling wm experience.

Here you go my friend. If you don’t want to do a new install and just add i3 go here.

Have fun with a new experience. This setup and theming that @joekamprad and others set up will make the transition a lot easier. Correct @BONK?

There never was one, the one we have at the devel ISO repository was only to tryout if it is suitable to use i3 for the Installer ISO.

We never plan to provide Community ISO’s because we have one ISO fit for all, we do currently work on an ISO with the Option to install Community setups, like the one for sway and soon may also BSPWM, also possible to add custom i3 setups or what ever the community come up with.

They are wonderful to use, providing you meet a couple of criteria:

  1. You like keyboard-based access to everything you need to do
  2. You are young enough to learn and remember the commands!

I used to keyboard my way through much of my doings ‘back in the day’ - but that was on Amiga, which was uniquely suited to mixing CLI and GUI - even with differing resolutions on the same screen at the same time!
