Hyprland not starting after system update

recently, i have decided to install and set up hyprland, and prior to running sudo pacman -Syu last night and restarting, everything worked as expected. upon booting this morning and logging onto the hyprland session using the plasma login manager, it showed the terminal for a second before returning to the plasma login manager. i restarted again, and my computer hung on switch root. then, i switched from zen to lts and that issue was fixed, but i was still unable to start hyprland.

also reinstalled hyprland, but, unsurprisingly, nothing changed. then i logged into my plasma session to type this post. you will also see windscribe in the logs, because i needed to send the system logs, and it seems my isp has decided to block the pastebin-like sites.

logs (pkexec journalctl -b -0, pkexec journalctl -b -1, pkexec journalctl -b -2, systemd-analyze blame, hwinfo --short):

From your Plasma session run:

hyprland

or

start-hyprland

Then copy and paste the output here in the thread.
It’s probably an outdated/incompatible library issue.

hyprland: error while loading shared libraries: libjxl.so.0.11: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

yup

How is your Hyprland installed? If it’s from the AUR, you probably need to rebuild rather than reinstall. Try the below if it’s from the AUR, using grep to find the name of the Hyprland package you installed then rebuilding it.

pacman -Q | grep -A 0 -E "hypr"
yay -Syu hyprlandPackageName --rebuild

Note: This may not work depending on your setup, like if you have multiple AUR packages that depend on that library.

i installed it from the extra repository

Well if I look at the mentioned file this is what I get.

Not sure if there also is a AUR package installed that requires this file and the package needs to be updated.

libjxl is installed and up-to-date, there are some relevant packages installed from the AUR (leftover from when i installed the git version, i really should have mentioned that) that i saw and am currently updating. once that is finished i will see if the issue persists or not.

OK, on my Hyprland install, the package libjxl provides libjxl.so=0.12-64, which is obviously not the version your hyprland wants. The package that requires this is hyprgraphics, which was last updated on 2026-07-11.

Do you have a git version installed, by chance?

This is what I was facing, so what I am currently doing is updating/rebuilding all the hypr packages listed by grep. It’s taking WAY longer than usual because my internet is being WAY slower than usual at the moment.

But it seems just rebuilding hyprgraphics might be enough.

I tried running all of the Hyprland packages from git, but the compiles were way too slow on my system.

$pacman -Qsq hypr | sudo pacman -Rns -

then,

$sudo pacman -S hyprland

It’s a combo of AUR and ChaoticAUR for me, so not as long. This is only an internet issue right now. They literally just finished installing. Will reboot soon.

post your /etc/pacman.conf

yup

On first boot (new install) Hyprland will create the new ~/.config/hypr/hyperland.lua file as of version 0.55.

This is a copy of it:

You should update your bios on your Thinkpad T460 as well:

i have upgraded the git packages multiple times, and hyprland-guiutils-git fails to build due to a problem with hyprland-donate-screen

thanks for letting me know, will do

It sounds like you are trying to use the AUR version of Hyprland. Why not use the official Arch version?

sudo pacman -S hyprland

I installed this last week and it works perfectly.

I would not recommend you use “hyprland-guiutils” from the AUR.

There is also a nice shell for it called Noctalia:
