I like virtualbox. I can use virt-manager but v-box is quicker and easier for me to use. I have no issue with it when it’s working properly on any distro. I also like vmware workstation. Video is loading KDE and taking over 30 seconds. Mine loads in about 8-10 and kde isn’t the fastest loading to the desktop to begin with.
It’s been awhile; think I was using QEMU 2.x.
You probably have different hardware than the person in the video.
I am not sure.
I followed @s4ndm4n’s tutorial to get it set-up and started.
Now revisiting the same, I see there is a section dealing with the same issue.
I’ll try to read through that and see if I can resolve it.
Also CTT is running Debian not Arch. Maybe performance is different there?
That Video is bias anyway.
Because with qemu/libvirt all needed driver are build in Kernel and/or distribruted by the most of the distribrutions. Of course it runs than faster.
But if you install the Virtualboxdrivers/additions to a VM in Virtualbox, its runs not measureable for me exactly at the same speed. But this you must do manualy.
Your new avatar is nice
This is my avatar from 10 years ago and the one I use on Discord too. I didn’t like the background of the avatar I was using before so changed it back to my very old one.
I had missed to set the following settings properly:
Now It works perfectly.
I had an issue with the resolution of the guest not to remain as I set it and to revert back to some other value. Now it seems to have been resolved as well.
QEMU is built for Linux and to use the kernel to virtualize QEMU is in between a type 1 and a type 2 hypervisor. VirtualBox is a Type 2 hypervisor that actually runs on top of a host operating system. There is a good difference between the performances. I mainly noticed that when I ran Windows on VirtualBox but there is not much difference when Linux distros run on both.
VirtualBox is best for ease and when one doesn’t has to deal with a lot of confiuguerations. QEMU is great when some need a bear metal-level performance. I was an advocate for VirtualBox but once I figured out QEMU/Virt-Manager I never turned back. I do use VB here and there when I have to deal with Wayaland+Sway other than that I hardly use it.
Part of the reasons we all see different performance results is likely because we are doing different things inside the VMs. If you don’t do anything intensive, you might not notice much difference. If you do, all the sudden the difference is obvious.

Are you doing the CTT Virtualbox QEMU challenge too @ricklinux?
What is that?
Edit: What do i win?
Challenge accepted!

How did you get it to do the screen size 1920x1080? Are you using full screen mode?
Edit: What is the challenge? Get me to install Gnome?
Inside the guest:
Settings: Display: Resolution
Perhaps you need to set the guest vm properly before. See my posts further above.
Dunno! Wasn’t it CTT’s Qemu/Virt-Manager Challenge?
Challenge is to see what is faster on your computer Virtualbox or QEMU and to disprove CTT
With my little testing so far, subjectively speaking, I get a feeling of having a near-bare-metal performance with Qemu.
I can never get virtmanager to set the same resolution as my monitor. On v-box or vmware it just works.
Edit: It always goes too large and i get scroll boxes. So i gave up on it!
