Hi everyone, happy to be here!

Hello all. happy to be here. Just joined the forum after committing to EndeavourOS. After 40 years I’ve finally ditched Windows on my home computer and committed to Linux. I’m not new to Linux having dabbled for decades in every distro and flavor imaginable but I settled on Arch. I’m fully setup with btrfs/snapper for system snapshots and borg/vorta for ad-hoc data backups. I’ve got plex media server, sonarr and nzbget integrated with all libraries ported from my old Windows machine. I use appimages for 3D Printer Slicer software and Gear Leaver takes care of the integration perfectly. Not really much more to say other than everything is working perfectly, even the custom SMPlayer scripts to load random internet radio stations I used to use WinAmp to access. My machine has been given a new lease of life as the performance of EOS embarrasses Windows. Anyway, pleased to be here.

Good to have you with us, - interested to know what the final straw was for you with Windows? Yep, I know there have been many over the last few years especially, but everyone has their own story.

WinAmp… that’s a blast from the past, - I think XMMS is about as close as you might get to the equivalent? It’s been a while. I used to love the skins for the player, - some incredible art among them. Enjoy the journey, - welcome back to owning your own compute experience. Free from spyware and ad-infested elements.

Welcome @BlasterDr0id957
Yes, Arch based is the best ever Linux (on Linux since 2000, and distro hoped like crazy since 2021).
Here is the best distro ever and the best community ever.

With all my due respect @Canoe, Windows stuff are never straws, each single “straw” is a block of granite that weighs a few tons over my chest! This is how I felt since Windows Win 3.1!
Viruses, crashes, stupid updates, getting heavier and not responsive by time, spending most of the time on the computer just fixing it not doing the work… I won’t call these “straws”, I never felt since Win 3.1 these are straws!
You know what, after this Win3.1 came out I really missed the good old DOS days and apps and still today miss them somehow.

Hello @BlasterDr0id957. Welcome to the Forum.

I’m glad you’ve managed to give up Windows after so many years and I hope you don’t relapse.

I doubt he will relapse.
He said he tried several distros for long time.
So he is familiar with Linux.
Just curious, does anybody know of anybody who used any Linux for 6-12 months and quit Linux? I doubt (unless it is some guy who is living for games only, and specific games AND never looked at alternative games AND thinking on Linux like “I cant find M$ Office or Internet explorer in Linux:joy:)

Anything can happen, but I hope it doesn’t. Never say never.

Edit:

Maybe he is leaving after Clippy makes a return to Office or as AI in Windows.

Windows 11 seemed to be stuck in a cycle of poor performance with the constant patching not actually improving anything. Performance was the major issue from Windows 10. I like tinkering and prefer to fix issues myself, or at least have the chance to.

I grew up with WinAmp and could never let it go - classic skin! It’s the only thing I miss

With everything working I see no reason to go back. The last time I tried was with SLES9 a long time ago; different world these days it seems.

There’s Audacious which has an old, look-like WinAmp skin available, if I remember correctly.

Yep! Brings back memories!
