@joekamprad
Yeah i know, and as i’ve said - it’s not anything against people who want to use it - freedom to everyone!
But to recommend it in wiki of Linux distro (which always privacy aware crowd) after all that is…weird, don’t you think?
That’s maybe just me, but…
Have seen that type of stuff multiple times before and experience always tells it’s if / else…
I haven’t seen otherwise, both in life and technology where it wouldn’t be the case.
Privacy and trust is serious stuff man.
I could extrapolate to some really harsh analogies like: “Sorry i’ve raped you! Won’t ever happen again, it was just bad day, i haven’t really meant it…We can still be friends!”
Again, what i’m pointing out is just one thing - you always want to suggest your friends nice things
But outside of that - your friends are very free to ignore you and snort cocaine and do whatever they want
Yeah…@kresimir was right, most likely it’s just some noob-dev thing initially, and why the hell they need internet connection at all for creating drive is good question
js people this days…Just pulling dependencies blindly.
Once my trust of someone falls below the trust I feel towards a complete stranger (that is, below neutral), that’s when that relationship is over, because it’s easier to build new relationships with strangers, who start at zero (not including any prejudices, which unfortunately always exist), than to fix relationships that are in the negative. That’s generally true, unless there is something else really valuable that makes that relationship worth it, even if there is little trust left.
With Etcher, there is no such extra value, because even if it were a completely trustworthy program, it’s objectively a pretty crummy utility, since it’s based on Electron, and there exist countless alternatives, a very good one of those already installed on every GNU/Linux system.
/**
* @summary Check that the client is eligible for analytics
*/
function isClientEligible(probability: number) {
return Math.random() < probability;
}
I guess if probability is 0 the function returns false, but that’s a strange way to establish eligibility for analytics
Just to be clear on the current issues with Etcher as opposed to the past issues.
I believe the analytics problem was fixed at this point. The remaining issues as I understand them are that they are hosting the ads they show you during the imaging process on their website. When they pull the ads in, they are also pulling in all the trackers and other crap from their site.
For me, the bigger issue is how they have handled everything
When the issue was reported of analytics opt-out not being honored, they made a statement that it wasn’t a priority.
It then took them ~year to fix it.
They continued to ignore the fact that they were still making connections to a bunch of social media sites until much later
They have demonstrated pretty clearly that they just don’t care about your privacy.
All that being said, are they doing anything malicious or stealing your data? No.
Yee-haa! That was my point all along. If you follow the older conversations on the same topic, you’d see I was also a proponent of switching to something other than Etcher, however, what must prevail in the whole discussion is the respect for other people’s right to choose “what they darn want”, even if it’s not the best for them That was the only thing I had reacted to in your passionate rant
Never used any “fancy” tools; dd always got the job done!
For those with rooted Android phones - try out DriveDroid. Copy an ISO to your phone as is, connect the phone to your pc, fire up drivedroid and you’ll be able to boot from your phone. You can hold as much iso’s as your storage space allows. I haven’t needed to write an image to an actual usb device for years.
Obviously, everyone is free to choose whatever software to use. No post from some opinionated guy on the internet like me has the power to deny this freedom to anyone. However, respect is earned, nobody is entitled to it. It’s not a voluntary choice to have respect for someone, just like it is not a voluntary choice to feel love for someone.
The right to choose freely is not something you’d normally have to fight for. Definitely not here. What I mean is respecting other people’s rights is not something they need to earn.
This forum comes with implied respect for all its members and their rights to use whatever they want on their machines.
Yeah, but nobody is contesting anybody’s right to choose software freely. So I don’t see why you would think that that right needs to be fought for.
Just because I say: “stop using Etcher”, what weight has that for someone who is set on using Etcher?
Also, if I think less of someone for choosing something like that, who cares? It’s of no consequence to anybody what I think, unless they care about my opinion, in which case they’re going to listen to me. I’m not some emperor of the universe to deny anybody any right, no matter how I feel about it.
Telling people what to do is an attack on their free will. The fact that you can’t/won’t enforce it makes it less so, but it’s still an aggressive move. You can help build a friendly community without that
Attack on free will? Aggression? Is that a joke, or are you serious? Those are really heavy accusations over a statement: “stop using Etcher”… Are you really claiming that I am aggressive and attacking people’s free will?
It’s definitely not a serious thing to fuss over in the current context. My last comments were more of a philosophical/theoretical nature, as you seemed inclined to sway into that territory yourself. If I’ve misread your proclivity that’s alright too, we can stop. Cheers!
Sure, I just hope it is clear that I wasn’t aggressive or attacking anyone’s free will. I try to be friendly and helpful to everyone, no matter whether I think they made a good or a bad choice with their ISO burner utility.
