Heads up on Etcher

I just feel the need to say this:

^ That quote is taken slightly out of context. There is a 330 or so words rant before it, that sets the context.

Besides, unlike strangers on the internet who don’t really care, if your friends and family also tell you not to use Balena Etcher, that’s because they mean well. They see you’ve made a poor choice in life, and they want to help you!

You got a :boom: to address all that

No amount of words can properly express insanity of using electron for small single-purpose utility :alien:

Although, if we’re speaking purely about freedom of choice - of course everyone should use whatever the hell they want to, even if it’s not good for them

That sounds like a challenge.

Maybe I should write an even bigger rant?

Just kidding, I won’t.

For now…

I mean, they also know HTML and CSS (they need to know CSS to make that nice button with rounded corners), but these are not programming languages.

There are so many options for this if you want a GUI. Suse studio Image writer would be my choice if preferring a GUI app for this.

Of course use whatever you prefer. I prefer to keep my install sparse so etcher does not make my shortlist.

I’m using Disks, and everybody should!

I think ventoy is great! You installed it once, afterwards you just have to copy every iso you want to the stick and it will boot! If you have multiple iso’s, you can choose which one you want to boot from.

Yes, it’s very nice to have a dozen isos on one USB stick.

what is wrong with dd? :innocent:

sudo dd bs=4M if=/path/to/endeavouros-x86_64.iso of=/dev/sdX status=progress && sync

also working for windows:

The “status=progress” doesn’t seem to make it through to the end, and it seems to take forever - whether it does or not! Also, as well as seeming faster (< 4 minutes for EOS), mint stick means you don’t have to do a “sudo fdisk -l” beforehand to make SURE you don’t have any typos or misremembered ID’s  As you get older, you take steps against C.R.A.F.T. disease… (Can’t Remember A F… Thing)

I will remove etcher recommendation from WIKI if someone can show me evidence on home-calling of it!

Quick search revealed that:

I’ve also asked @dalto (since he still must have access) to see if links on Manjaro forums closed part is still there, which lead to removal of Etcher from .iso.

we do not have etcher installed per default and it is not on the ISO.
I do have also some strange experience on asking devs at etcher some times before, so there is a concern already and i stop using it here already

That seems a little harsh… if it was not done maliciously, and has since been corrected, then surely it could be regarded as a “spent offence”?
