Grub Boot "Errors"

Ran pacman -Syu this morning. Only a few update since I ran it last night. Got the arch kernel and three (I think) systemd upgrades. Rebooted right after the upgrades and saw the following failures in Grub boot. Every loaded and is running without issue. Dual boot machine, and everything is fine in Windows.

Failed to start First Boot Wizard.
Failed to start File System Check on Root Device.
Failed to start Rebuild Hardware Database.
Failed to start Repartition Root Disk.
Failed to start Create System Users.

Here is the pertinent part of the journalctl -b log for full context.

Any thoughts?

P.S. No errors on pacman upgrade. System is Windows dual boot running Cinnamon on BTRFS (/ on SSD and /home on HD).

Did you enable systemd-firstboot?

What does systemctl status systemd-firstboot.service show?

I never enabled systemd-firstboot (the I know of).

Can we see more of the journal from that boot. I would like to see earlier in the boot process.

That shouldn’t be trying to run on an existing system.

@sliding_billy

Long listings of log files are very annoying to people not interested is going through them.
Please start using

[details="My log output"]
output from logs
[/details]

To hide long information lists.

Doing this will result in

My log output

output from logs

Click on the right pointing arrow to toggle hidden or shown info.

EDIT:
Re-reading this, it seemed rather stern. This is not a reprimand, just a suggestion to use a fourm feature that is not know to many users.

I’m not sure exactly where this option is to be honest. Sorry, and no worries about the tone. I am one of the people who has never seen or used that feature.

It is not shown on the editing menu bar, that’s why few users know about it.
just type in as part of the message

[details="Your description of the hidden info"]

then paste in the information. On a new line type in

[/details]

Then everything in between the beginning and ending details will be hidden or shown.

If you have problems or questions, let me know and I will be glad to help.

Got it and edited the original. I was overthinking it looking for a button. Now if I can just figure out the issue I am having. Looks like a boot timing issue. Hard to believe nobody else has seen it. Thanks!

You can also find the “Hide details” option if you click the gear icon when composing a post:

And, when posting terminal output, it will be much more readable if you enclose it using the “Preformatted text” option:

Well, I’ll be. It was hiding there in plain sight.
Just goes to show, you learn something new every day.
Thanks for the input.

EDIT:

Summary

This text will be hidden

Works well and it beats typing it in as I always get the first [details=“text”], then sometimes I forget to add the ending [/details] and wonder “Now why didn’t that work, it worked fine the last time”.

This thread got a bit off topic… I booted to LTS, and there were no errors. I reinstalled linux, linux-headers and systemd. All installed fine, and system booted “fine.” Errors are still there on boot to linux kernel.

I currently see failing since yesterday:

Maybe I’ll find some time to dig deeper into the logs. The last successful boot was on 2021-10-14 07:00 UTC. Updates are run daily and I didn’t notice any error either.

Anything you find would be great. I’m at a loss. I am running “fine” despite the boot errors, but…

There is a bug report for Arch about this: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/72425

Thanks! Must have got posted since I last searched and asked beyond here.

Thanks. :+1:

Looking into my pacman.log the update of systemd from 249.4-2 → 249.5-1 should be the culprit.

Kind of felt that way to me in terms of timing and testing (when it happened to me, systemd and the linux kernel were the only things updated, so it was either systemd or most likely the reaction to systemd and the kernel. since the lts kernel doesn’t have an issue after the updates, and the kernel doesn’t have an issue on other computers, the issue looks to be the combination of computer, systemd and kernel). All of my 4 machines are very similar installs, but one is pretty much exact to my DD with the issues.

I think this happened to me as well. Spent the last hour using Timeshift to restore my main pc. It didn’t happen on my laptop, only difference was that I run a different kernel.
