GNOME/XFCE - Can't Start XFCE Session

Hi all,

Main DE is GNOME; I got curious and thought I’d try running XFCE4 for a while.

Followed this thread here (Can I install the endeavorOS xfce environment next to gnome?)

Executed:

sudo pacman -S xfce4
sudo pacman -S xfce4-goodies

Install went fine; logged out, selected XFCE 4 (Wayland), but the login screen loops back to the user selection menu. Clicking it prompts “Authentication Error,” and I can’t re-enter my password. The back radio button responds with click, but no action.

Thoughts? Thank you.

You might want to give this a read:

Note that Wayland support is marked as experimental for a good reason: things will not work like you expect it to and a lot of stuff is generally broken .

I can attest ‘Experimental’ mode in Endeavour Cinnamon is not ready for human consumption; caveat emptor. Stick with X11 til DE’s–other than Gnome and Plasma–are dialed in is my current gameplan.

When I release EnOS ARM images I do a lot of testing before releasing the images.
In my opinion, XFCE has the worst Wayland support of the DEs that EnOS offers.
Try logging into XFCE with x11.

Then if you don’t like XFCE’s vanilla theming, try this to get an EnOS feel to it.

Gah! Missed that one. I thought I’d tried logging in via X11 but I guess not – worked!

However, logging back into GNOME changed some theme settings such as fonts and and shell. I will investigate further when I have time but resources are also appreciated. Thanks again!!!

If you want to use wayland in xfce, you have to also install labwc. It is the main compositor for the wayland session.

sudo pacman -S labwc

or wayfire (3D wayland compositor)

I see wayfire is only available in the AUR. I also see wayfire plus a bunch of other wayfire oriented packages. How many support packages / plugins did you install?

This one looks interesting
swayfire-git – Sway/I3 inspired tiling window manager for Wayfire

I think I will wait until wayfire hits the main Archlinux repositories.

Right now I’m on KDE, I only use wayland and XFCE right now is not good with nvidia.

You can install it from Chaotic-aur, Cachy or Artix repos.

When I tried it (briefly), I don’t remember using extra plugins, wayfire, wf-shell for panel/dock, wcm for managing the config and mako for the notification daemon is a good start.
