Gnome Network Displays on KDE

Hello everybody!

Recently I’ve needed to connect my laptop to the TV so that I could mirror my screen. I remember using the screen mirroring feature on Windows which, iirc, uses miracast. Therefore, I tried using miraclecast which I couldn’t get to work and might not be what I want. Since I need to browse the web when mirroring the screen, I can’t use miraclecast as it needs to disable NetworkManager and wpa_supplicant.

Therefore I found gnome-network-displays which apparently is not dedicated to gnome.

Once I open the APP, my TV is listed there but, once I click on it, is asks for a password to create some firewall rules / profile in order to allow connections.

After typing the password I would get the following error:
after-password

Going back and trying to connect tells me that it is trying to connect to the selected sink and then times out. (it doesn’t even show on my TV that a device is trying to connect so I think this can be related to the firewall error that I got before.

Going to the firewall, I can see a new rule named “P2P-WiFi-Display” (I don’t know if this was generated by miraclecast but I supose it wasn’t, however, going to leave it here).

It sets as trusted services: dhcp and dns

Allows the port 7236 for TCP.

Allows the protocols: icmp and ipv6-icmp

Rich Rules has the following rule:

It didn’t enable/ add / tick anything on Source Ports, Masquerading, Port Forwarding, ICMP Filter, and Sources

I got an error on dmesg for gnome-network-displays:

This error only happened once. After restarting the app I couldn’t see error again after several attempts.

Journalctl has the following (might not be related):

I would like to have this feature working on KDE as it is a feature that I used quite a lot on windows. It would be nice seeing this on KDE as gnome 45 announced they’ll have screen mirroring built-in to the DE. Hopefully KDE will implement something like this as well on Plasma 6.

EDIT: I’ve looked up my router to check if I was connecting to the correct TV. I did this because my neighbour has an LG tv as well and they have similar names. I tried connecting with my phone and it works properly so I am connecting to the right TV. The funny thing here is that, for some reason, they have different mac addresses… Through gnome, I see this mac address C6:36:6C:93:6E:02 but through my router I see 3C:CD:93:B7:2E:E2. Not sure if this matters, but more info doesn’t hurt

unfortunately same here as well. Tried fiddling with the Firewalld settings but to no avail. Will post here if I find a resolution also.

This thread showed up on a web search and very little else did so I’ll revive it.

I was messing around with this for way too long and started to throw the kitchen sink at it. Which ultimately worked, with the caveat we’ll never know what exactly fixed it.

Weirdly unlike the original issue, the P2P-WiFi-Display zone was not automatically created (although I didn’t restart any services after installing gnome-network-displays) and I manually added it. It then at some point (presumably a firewalld/networkmanager restart) populated.

The zone itself is pretty straightforward and I doubt I did anything to fix it (attached, P2P-WiFi-Display.xml)

The most significant action I did was add policies; source ports and sources (I also added IPSets which I believe to be unused; and I duplicated some of the P2P-WiFi-Display rules to the relevant zones that I am using in my LAN):

* Add 7236/tcp to **Ports** # likely unnecessary
* Add 7236/tcp *and* 7236/udp to Source Ports # likely TCP unnecessary
#Add sources to P2P-WiFi-Display (my home subnet doesn't use this scope; from a firewall perspective the /8 submask is a bad idea in case a shared network you ever has this subnet):
* 192.168.0.0/8
* 192.168.0.0/8 # use with caution!
* 192.168.49.117/32 # from output of `$ip addr` - an interface called P2P-WiFi-Display appeared
* 192.168.1.198/32 # the Wi-Fi LAN IP of my television. Unknown relevance

Hope this helps and we can figure out the original issue; and how to lock down the firewall a little more without losing wireless display functionality.
