We could probably guess something like this was inevitable. We just recently saw an LLM created alternatives for the Adobe and MS Office suites.
Gregory M. Kurtzer, the chap who was a founder of CentOS, and later created Rocky Linux, has leveraged a coding agent to create a new independent kernel and OS prototype, Ginux.
Ginux was built to test whether a coding agent, directed by someone with the relevant systems experience, could construct an independent kernel that runs existing Linux userspace. Over eleven days, one persistent OpenAI Codex task using GPT-5.6 Sol produced approximately 139,000 retained lines of implementation and test code.
The development method is called Human-Directed Agentic Engineering (HDAE). Human direction established the architecture, constraints, milestones, acceptance criteria, and stopping point. The agent implemented, booted, tested, diagnosed, and revised the system against executable gates. Architecture and decision documents kept the work aligned; real userspaces exposed failures that synthetic tests missed.
The result demonstrates rapid construction of deep systems software, not a production alternative to Linux. The project does not reproduce Linux’s broad compatibility, hardware enablement, review, vendor ecosystem, community, or long-term maintenance.
And ethics is all that matters. Until we, including Torvalds, get that right, “eat the rich” (and privileged) is all I’m rooting for.
I don’t care who someone is/was. If they are/become inconsiderate of others, it’s due to either riches or privilege, and as such, they can get “eaten” too.
And I especially hate when someone in a position of power/influence says/does things that help to make things worse for the majority.
Probably person pointing out how incredible disconnected from common sense and reality all this news is.
I saw it somewhere earlier and need to check if it is April 1st or not, again. So it interapted my 1 day without checking thing. BTW this goonix is actually fun one.
I see that popular tech news sources is getting pretty close to tiktok thing.
Just breath in and breath out. Need to filter information hard to remain sain this days.
I did not get a “politics” vibe from @ddnn comment. I thought it was more a commentary on Torvalds’ beginnings as a creator of Linux as a way to get around having to pay for his development system as a student vs. Torvalds’ growth into the one of the powerful and wealthy who now supports technology (AI) that may prove to be Linux’s downfall.
