No, there was no process. I never changed that.
The mimeapps.list file just contains a couple of entries for webm and mp4. There is no mention of GIMP or gif.
And Gwenview opens gif files on my computer.

But thatās the point - you shouldnāt have file (entry for .gif in case of @Kresimir) unless youāve manually overridden something

Well, neither did the OP, yet on his machine, itās GIMP that opens gifs.
We donāt know if he have ~/.config/mimeapps.list, if i havenāt missed that

P.P.S. mimetypes are bloat.

Who knows at this point this thread has spoken of gnome, kde, and a frankensteined lxqt with kde apps.

Any kde-mimeapps.list files? Perhaps Iām missing something. I still suspect that what I wrote is in the right ballpark, since OP said that update-desktop-database appeared to fix it, and that should only generate the cache files. But maybe thereās some other detail involved as well, e.g. maybe KDE records preferred applications somewhere else, or maybe OP was using a different file manager from you.

Iām not really understanding all this talk. It sounds like just a matter of associating a file type to the program you want to open it with. Right click on the file and open with other prgm and set as default.

The problem reappeared for me after a while, and update-desktop-database didnāt undo it anymore.
However, I tried deleting ~/.config/mimeapps.list and then running update-desktop-database, and that helped.
So far, reinstalling gimp doesnāt override Gwenview as default app anymore.
I hadnāt tried this because last time I checked the file, I couldnāt find gimp set as default for anything in there. But this time it was.
