I’m trying to get the “Epson Perfection V600 Photo” scanner to work on EOS.
The scanner is connected through USB.
I found this post:
and I’ve looked over at arch linux[1], where I found some info and installed:
iscan-plugin-gt-x820
iscan-data
I found others trying to find solutions for Mint[2] - no usable info there, I don’t think.
I tried vuescan: does find and connect to the scanner but it doesn’t seem to properly use the transparency unit (needed for negatives and positives).
I even installed wine and the epson software with wine.
And I tried many more things (which I can’ t remember), but so far I can’ t get the scanner to work properly.
Trying to run the epsonscan2 software: the scanner is found, but can’t be connected to. Which could be due to permissions for the usb-port; I changed the permissions, but that does not change anything.
Running wine: the scanner is not found by the scan software.
I’m out of ideas.
Did anyone get this scanner to work on EOS? All and any suggestions welcome.
maybe you can try with iscan (found in AUR) instead of epsonscan2 (which is a newer version)
it is possible that the needed plugin doesn’t work with epsonscan2
I use iscan for my epson photo v330 and works perfectly.
It does take a long time for the scanner to come up though
one “problem” though:
Using this scanner with my mac the epson software will automatically find all slides/negatives/positives in the transparency unit and then scans all slides/negatives/positives separately in one batch; iscan does not seem to be able to do that?
So, the workflow is - unfortunately - rather convoluted, compared to when I use the scanner with my (very) old mac, and its proprietary software. I’ve really given it a try, though.
But I will have to boot up the mac for a bit longer if I want to finish scanning all my old negatives and positives before I retire…
I just found out that there is a package for none free plugins
epsonscan2-non-free-plugin
Did you install this too?
I’m trying to build/install this to see if this works with my v330
Edit: install epsonscan2 first, after this is complete install epsonscan2-non-free-plugin.
Installing together resulted in an error, missing dependency epsonscan2 when installing epsonscan2-non-free-plugin
Edit2: this does not work, apparently only modern scanners are supported, not the older ones
I tried with the flatpak version and indeed this does work with my v330, while the AUR version does not.
It has more options than iscan;
48bit color depth
Scan at 1200 dpi
film positive and negative scan
More image formats including pdf, png and multi tiff
auto filename counter (click on the search icon next to filename)
The dropdown for “document source” should not only have “scanner glass” as an option, but also “transparency unit”.
One can “load” the transparency unit with strips of (uncut) negatives or positives (2 X 6), and then the scan software (on my macos) wil scan all 12 negatives/positives as separate images, without me having to “tell” the software anything. It will simply find and scan all 12 in one go.
Can’t provide a screenshot at the moment, am not at home.
