Game Launch Steam

I’m trying to launch NBA 2K20 which shows as Gold on ProtonDB.

I added PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to set launch options in steam.

Processing Vulkan shaders took about an hour to run.

Nothing runs, but in steam I see Launching Executable.

The game seems to be running poorly in general for everyone, even with a 2060. You can try to “Verify the integrity of the game cache…” and try running it with previous versions of Proton.


Supposedly someone got it running well with a custom version of Proton too:

  1. Kill all those process trying to launch

  2. According to protondb reports, use GloriousEggroll, if in doubt on how - it’s very easy, see Install custom Proton engine here:

I assume you actually use Optimus laptop Nvidia/Intel, right?

You need to force Nvidia driver while gaming otherwise there will be all kinds of problem and no DXVK working:

  1. Check your dedicated GPU part here in db Linux gaming [Guide] and make sure you’ve followed all requirements

  2. If not already, seriously advice to use / read on Optimus Switch - Another Solution for Optimus Laptops

  3. Read something about PRIME rendering offload in Lutris / Steam, try Ferral game mode (https://github.com/FeralInteractive/gamemode)

P.S. Even if you only have Intel card, maybe not best for gaming, but technically it should have Vulkan working somehow too according vulkan db:

Not on the laptop I’m setting up right now, I do have another laptop with Optimus.

Installing proton-ge-custom crashes my computer during the install process, it eats up all my RAM and then the computer freezes.

What do you mean by install process?
It’s just extracting archive to folder

I’m guessing I don’t know the technical Linux terms at this point because I have no idea what else to call it.

I search for proton-ge-custom in Pamac, select it, start the install. it runs for like 10-15 minutes, all RAM is used up and the computer freezes.

Just to warn you it’s going to be like 12 hours before I can do any troubleshooting on that computer.

Oh well, you just haven’t followed recommendations i’ve posted :confused:

Don’t use packages, use engine directly from github and do as in this instruction in section about custom Proton engine

To install the GE proton build on my laptop a few weeks ago, I followed this very quick and simple video

ETA: Just had a look at keybreaks section on custom proton engines in his gaming guide and he basically gives same instructions as what’s in video anyway. Either way the process is very quick to do

Native

This section is for those that use the native version of Steam.

  1. Download a release from the Releases page.
  2. Create a ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d directory if it does not exist.
  3. Extract the release tarball into ~/.steam/root/compatibilitytools.d/ .
  4. Restart Steam.
  5. Enable proton-ge-custom.

And as to why Pamac froze up your system, could’ve been that you were building a package and got impatient or it’s Pamac…

Do make a habit out of checking ProtonDB when installing games through Steam. You can set up filters on there to match your distro and your hardware.

Yup, often the case.

It’s mostly GPU differences due to the drivers and all, though it’s all the same most of the time.

Or how a report is written based on the persons distro, as for example Debian and Arch are a tad different.


Weirdly enough, I have no clue how they approve reports. Anything I’ve ever written got declined, despite it being detailed and there’s plenty of useless or duplicate reports that constantly go through.

Do take things with a grain of salt and try multiple solutions.
