Fresh Install, No Ethernet

hi, apparently its something called EEE ( Energy Efficient Ethernet) causing the issue with Virgin Media Hub’s new firmware and can be fixed by disabling it it in config file

How do I disable it in this distro?

For a more comprehensive list (not just the first hit):

pacman -Q | grep nvidia

Yes you are right, I replied for this when I didn’t have an Arch install at the time and it was the first thing that came of the top of my head.

I’m kind of lost here? I thought you had the ethernet working? What is this you are talking about now?

Edit: Maybe this helps.

@Star-Lord
There is a kernel parameter i think that works. Not sure if you are using grub or systemdboot? But the kernel parameter is igb.EEE=0 You need to add that to the grub command line and run the update grub command if using grub or if you are using systemd-boot then you add it to the kernel command line and reinstall kernels. I’ll give you instructions if you don’t know how.

Hi Rick

1.0G connection is working fine on even new kernels but Its 2.5G that doesnt since last few updates on any Distro.

Even on Nobara it has stopped working so ive been searching more into it, its apparently something that the firmware update on ISP router that enables EEE by default that broke it.

I use the default option for installation so i think its systemd-boot?
It looks all pretty when choosing which OS to boot.

Okay you could try then by adding the kernel parameter igb.EEE=0 in /etc/kernel/cmdline and then run sudo reinstall-kernels

I’m only reading up on this new standard so not sure this will work but you could try it.

didn’t work unfortunately.

I’ve ordered a managed 2.5G switch and will be testing it tomorrow.

it has the option to turn off EEE

I’m not sure how this works since it’s yout router firmware that you mentioned enables EEE? There must be a way to disable it. I know it can be done with ethtool but is only temporary until you reboot. I’m just not sure that the switch will matter since it is in the middle and the router already has it enabled? I would suggest checking the virgin support site.

Received the new switch.

its working. I can get 2.5G on Linux now.,

I honestly dont know how it works. Virgin media is still handling the DHCP part.

Glad it works for you. I don’t know either as I have Bell Fibe and my modem router is one unit that runs everything. Internet and TV. It’s capable of 10 GB
