Stuff going on over at: https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/issues
WORKAROUND (seems to be working):
Try adding --extractor-args “youtube:player-client=default,-tv_simply” to your command
Edit: not working for me
Edit2:
Working WORKAROUND
yt-dlp -f 137+140 <<URL>> --extractor-args "youtube:player-client=default,-tv_simply"
well that allowed me to download it anyway thanks. I hate YOUTUBE ![]()
Just a little update
it seems to work sometimes, sometimes not. ![]()
I hate myself loving to watch some stuff on Youtube ![]()
Thanks a lot @cactux
it’s the worst kind of cheating but sometimes it happens and I find a way to live with myself ![]()
meanwhile back at freetube
FOSS users pictured on right, with big ears
yt-dlp has stopped working for me too.
This worked for me, thanks
YT-DLP
Update should be coming down the pipeline
EDIT:
Confirmed: yt-dlp 2025.09.26 works ![]()
If you want you could already download it from upstream, verify the checksum, put it somewhwre in your PATH and run it.
Freetube with mpv as external player works as well.
PHEW, that was close!! ![]()
After installing the updated version, should I remove --extractor-args "youtube:player-client=default,-tv_simply" from my yt-dlp alias, or is it fine to leave it there?
Grayjay still works. Tried a couple youtube videos and the all run flawlessly.
This is not needed anymore.
I’m assuming these are not in the repo’s yet since they are not showing up in the updates for me as of yet. So for now everything is still broke. ![]()
@thefrog It’s already in the repo on my end—updated just a few minutes ago.
ok will have to do a mirror update then because it is still not coming in for me
updated mirrors and now its in there. downloading now
Something to note too, even when FreeTube is behaving, I’ve noticed many videos are limited to 360p, whereas in Grayjay I have access to up to 4K on the same video (when the video supports it).
Trying Grayjay on desktop right now. Importing YT subscriptions.
Just downloaded the .zip from AUR page and running as portable app for now.
Just before people jump on Grayjay, I should mention that it’s not immune to the YouTube issues either. Some videos refuse to play there too, but I do find that someones where either FreeTube or Grayjay fail, the other may work, so consider it something else to try, rather than a solution.
Is it getting YOUTUBE videos at 1080 or is it getting THE video from another source at 1080?
As far as I can tell, it’s streamed direct from YouTube, not a proxy.
