Extensions in GNOME 45

Yes—I went for 45 last nite & … it just works. One of the extensions I use is waiting for 45 to hit extra before posting the update & one is not there yet, but everything else is working. Pretty painless…

That’s been my experience since gnome 40. Lots of warnings, lots of nothing happening.

What else needs installing to see this tiling windows switch?

yay -S gnome-shell-extension-pop-shell and it should work..

i have
and indeed enable it in extensions tool..
i do not think it needs anyhing aside..

This is pretty much it.

It’s by far my favorite extension.

Note that I don’t think the “launcher” works outside if Pop**

Also note you will need to at least log out to see it come up.

I didn’t realize it was a PopOS extension. I thought it was something new with Gnome 45.

Looks like everything but GSConnect, ddterm, and OpenWeather already has Gnome 45 support on my list so far. I can work-around until they catch up if it comes to that.

I think the new gnome approved extension is called tiling assistant and it’s more like g tile than pop. I’ll try it. It’ll probably suck and I’ll go back to pop tiling

I’ve been using the Pop tiling for years though.

I’m just not that familiar with Gnome and all the extensions available and what is best to install because i don’t really use Gnome but i keep looking at the changes when they eventually come out.

I only use a few. Gnome is very good as is. Not much to change unlike kde where you gotta customize everything to make it useable.

I don’t find that on KDE. I hardly change anything. It does tiling and i don’t mind the way it works after you get used to it. Tiling is slightly different but not a big deal to me as i don’t use it constantly. I just don’t find the need to change many things in KDE. I’m not one to change something unless i come across something i like and it works without issue. Otherwise i just don’t change it. I use some things but I’m not one to change permissions or things like that. I stick to what i know well enough and leave what i don’t know well out of the picture until i understand how it works. Even btrfs i use and I’ve not had one issue with it with btrfs-assistant and snapper-support + btfrsmaintenace on grub. No file system issues with drives, no corruption, no failed booting, no problems updating everything just works. It’s not that i don’t like other desktops because i do. I just like KDE because it’s very fast, fluid, responsive and just doesn’t give me any problems. Have I ever had a problem? Sure but it was either my own doing or when the grub fiasco happened which really wasn’t much of an issue. It just caught most people off guard and not understanding how to deal with grub updates. I understand it now more than before because of that. I just had 3 grub package version updates recently with out issue on multiple machines and desktops. :man_shrugging:

It was more a joke. I could care less what everyone uses lol.

Thanks @joekamprad That worked great!

That’s okay…i was just explaining how i see it. :person_shrugging:

I actually think in a few years it’ll just be gnome and plasma for the most part.

I think xfce will go by the way side due to lack of developers. The only guy really still hitting it hard actually wants to work on elementary OS these days.

Cinnamon will still exist with Linux Mint and I think MATE will still be around for those few folks with old hardware still.

But I think xfce won’t be around much longer. I’m fairly skeptical about budgie even though it’s supposedly having a Renaissance currently.

I do think cosmic will get much bigger as system 76 keeps growing.

That’s cool. Although admittedly I don’t still don’t really care what others use as long as they are happy with their setup. You don’t need to explain it lol .I’m always amused by the great fake de war that’s been going on forever.

There’s no war … nothing fake. I just don’t understand what needs to be changed in order to make it more usable?

Edit: At least for me i just have no need. Sorry I don’t want to take this off topic. So i say no more.

May for the good
All the clutter … we do not need all the different Desktops it is mainly confusing users only… You start loving one when you are used to it indeed.

But Linux is cluttered all over the place… alternative Desktops should be niche, defaults should be well developped and shipped with common defaults.

So, I thought I saw a thing about this as being a “new” feature within gnome 45 - it’s not, apparently it’s always been here. It works. I’m goingto keep it here on my desktop for now. I find with all of the screen real estate, I tend to openbox style more often. My laptop is only 14" and i’m pretty much tiled 100% of the time.

It’s called tiling assistant.

It’s not actually new though.

Edit: I just spun up a Fedora 39 VM. Everything looks to be working fine for me. After a quick scan, there’s almost nothing special new for me. They still haven’t made Monday start in the calendar yet. . . But I digress. I can just keep changing LC_Time forever apparenty.
