EOS KDE is superb

Endeavour os and Kde plasma are God-Sent

I’m a happy Kde Plasma user and I like this idea! I have only wifi connection and online installation is slow even if my wifi isn’t the worst one. So minimal approach on the amount of packages sounds great. :+1:

Quite hard…

Yeah the only problem i was talking about kdiff3

Which

My opinion is that if we want a minimal option, leave it minimal. It is already pretty non-minimal. Everyone has their favorite package that they would want added. I actually think some packages should be removed.

  • kio-drive
  • audiocd-kio

Very few people need either of these packages and many people specifically don’t want any google-related packages in their install.

kde-applications is an enormous group. It is virtually all the k* apps. Almost nobody would consider that “minimal”. packagekit-qt5 should never be in the default install because it will activate the built-in plasma package updater and using that is unsafe.

No, xfce isn’t really any lighter than any other desktop since they switched to gtk3

I think this would be a mistake. Although I prefer a minimal install, most people expect a desktop with some tools by default. Also, an install without the whole plasma group will cause hassles for those who don’t understand plasma enough to understand what is missing when something they expect to work is missing or broken. I think the list in the old installer was a good compromise between minimal and bloated. The nice thing about the EOS installer is that you can unselect things. For example, when I do an install I unselect everything except the plasma group and then wish that konsole was on the list by itself instead of part of one of those meta packages.

The reality is there is no selection of packages that will please everyone. No matter how minimal you make it, people will complain it isn’t minimal enough. No matter how many packages you include others will complain it is missing things they need.

My minimal Arch install pacstrap is plasma, sddm, firefox, nano, iwd, man, grub, efibootmgr, konsole, dolphin, ark, kate, spectacle, and amd-ucode for my hardware.

Then i add my normal software applications after the install.

I don’t see this. Did they rename it to something else?

It is a group.

Even if I don’t actively use plasma anymore I totally agree with a minimal install option (not be the only option tho, probably a lot of people will still prefere the normal kde installation). I also think should be present for other DE too but I don’t really ever have checked what can be stripped from the other. Usually install only base system, also unchecking some packages, and then start from there for the DE/wm.

Unless you install on a very tight-resource machine, it doesn’t matter so much if you choose the minimun or normal options. Most standard apps doesn’t take much space and won’t consume RAM if you don’t use them.

It does long-term.

  • Your updates will be much larger. If you are bandwidth constrained, this can be an issue.
  • Your updates will be more complicated. The more software you have installed, the more chance to hit a difficult or blocking situation in an update.
  • System maintenance is generally easier with less packages as there are less problems to deal with.
  • Many packages have components that run all the time so just installing them can cause resource usage.

Looks like python-dbus has been replaced by dbus-python.

Yes… i noticed that the other day also looking at the packages.

After using Gnome3 then Gnome40 for some weeks and also XFCE i moved back to KDE plasma.
I think it’s the most complete GUI out there. Also is very light in comparison with Gnome and all the effects are more smoothly.
Also is much more scalable and customizable than the others.
For me KDE always will be my first choise and it’s awesome with the EndeavourOS
