DVD drive constantly throw errors on idle state

I have a bit of a weird errors here, perhaps someone more experienced in Kernel / devices will be able to help or debug

So since about Manjaro Stable Kernel: 5.6.16-1-MANJARO x86_64 it started, sadly happens on EndeavourOS as well :frowning:

I got journal full of those 2 type of errors, while my drive is idle, i don’t touch or interact with it manually (physically or software), nothing changed over time except updates…

journalctl -p3 -xb

jul 01 00:22:16 x133-PC kernel: blk_update_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 1 op 0x0:(READ) flags 0x0 phys_seg 2 prio class 0
jul 01 00:22:16 x133-PC kernel: Buffer I/O error on dev sr0, logical block 1, async page read

Additional info:

  1. My drive is NEC Optiarc BD RW BD-5300S
  2. It’s intact and works perfectly (haven’t tested writing though, but reading is perfectly good as it was before)
  3. Tried to reconnect SATA / power cables just in case
  4. In both cases i am on KDE and use TLP for power management

Any help is appreciated, i hate unwanted errors! :robot:

Hmm… have you tried with TLP disabled? It has a few settings related to disk drives.

Any other errors for sr0 in your logs?

I’ve tried to disable those settings specifically, like bay device power-off, will try to completely disable TLP and see if it helps!

No, just variations of those 2:

I notice an exact 5 minutes gap in the last part of your log.
Like something is polling the drive…

Might sound stupid, but do these errors also appear with a disk in the drive (but without mounting or otherwise doing something with it)?

I believe it’s same, as long as it’s idle - but i’ll double-check later too.
You think it might be some failed auto-mounting attempts by KDE or something like that?

Yeah that’s weird indeed…I definitely haven’t used this drive manually at that time (i’ve used Dolphin, some Wine maybe…otherwise just Firefox)

Using the LTS kernel might help.

Certainly will, since it’s started about ~5.6, but ideally i’d like to fix it and prevent from happening in future for myself and others

@torvic9
Hmmm…Check out extended log, there’s some attempts to poll drive indeed:

jul 29 15:39:41 x133-PC kernel: sr 5:0:0:0: [sr0] tag#21 FAILED Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE cmd_age=0s

Is there any way to find out what polls it?

Got it!
It got triggered each time when launching Wine :exploding_head:

I’m pretty sure there must be some other tiggers coz when i left PC on night without Wine programs launched - in the morning i still get those, but now at least we got some trigger to debug that

Maybe wineserver was still running in the background?

I do not know much about wine, but starting it with WINEDEBUG=warn+all wine might give more info.

Maybe wineserver was still running in the background?

100% not, i’m actually super paranoid about it and kill them all, unless i use it

  • When disc is inside drive (but not mounted) - it doesn’t got triggered by Wine!
  • In Dolphin when disc inside - it got added to removable drives category
  • When you eject disk - i can trigger this error by Wine again

So…Looks like my system just doesn’t know somehow that there is a drive anymore, without media inside

That wasn’t the case on LTS Kernel (at least around the time it came out, maybe it’s some other packages at play) :\

Ideas?

Unfortunately, no…
There are few sysctl settings related to cdrom, maybe you can try experimenting with these. I don’t know what they actually do, only guessing by their name:

# ls /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/
autoclose autoeject check_media debug info lock

check_media perhaps? No seriously, no clue…

Thx, i’ll check different possibilities and keep you posted if something comes up! :+1:

Yep, that’s right…A lot of log to read, nothing relevant so far! :upside_down_face:

So, ls /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/

cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/check_media

0

cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/debug

0

cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info

Wine errors i was able to get through logs which may be something (doesn’t seem connected, but i just don’t know those ones, maybe someone knows):

0070:err:heap:HEAP_GetPtr Invalid heap (nil)!
0078:err:ntoskrnl:ZwLoadDriver failed to create driver

@felixonmars
Since you’re maintainer of Wine on Arch, perhaps you know what could cause it?

Seems it’s only Wine after all, doesn’t matter wine or wine-staging, default wineprefix or non-system - it’s always those errors for me :frowning:
